Ridiculously valuable reference for the marketing writer with lots of specific "how to" guidance

Writing has been my job and passion for twenty-five years, but I needed some "how to" advice that the author promised in her introduction: "... part writing guide, part handbook on the rules of good sportsmanship in content marketing, and all-around reliable desk companion for anyone creating or directing content on behalf of brands." She delivers everything she promised and more.

I found the author's style to be entertaining and insightful as well as practical. One mere example among hundreds is her formula for judging the impact of your writing: "Utility � Inspiration � Empathy = Quality Content." Her point: you have to perform well in all three areas; if you score a zero for any one of these factors... well, you can do the math.

Part I reviews much of what I already knew about the process of writing. She covers not only the key steps in the writing process, but also offers detailed insights into refining and improving your copy. Part I contains great advice for people who don't know how to approach the task of writing, and it's laid out in a way that's easy to understand and remember.

Part II, about grammar and usage, offers lots of "Do this" and "Don't do that" advice. If you're a good writer already, then you'll find this section a refreshing, funny reminder about all the ways that we can go wrong with words. But if you're not as good a writer as you'd like to be, you'll learn a lot about giving your language more impact and power.

Part III is the briefest section, but with some powerful advice about crafting a great story.

Part IV contains lots of practical advice about what to write and how to write it. You'll find lots of detailed suggestions, such as how to properly cite others' work within your own. I particularly liked her chapter entitled, "See Content Moments Everywhere," which will open your eyes to the opportunities all around you for interesting stories that will help your brand punch above its weight. (And that's just one example of 15 subjects she covers in this section.)

But Part V – wow! It alone was worth ten times the price of the book. She gives point-by-point guidance for 13 different types of content that marketers create, such as blog posts, tweets, emails, headlines, home pages, infographics, and more. Nearly every marketer will learn something on every page of this section, no matter how experienced you are. I expect to return to this section again and again.

Part VI concludes with a list of pointers to various types of tools and resources that writers will certainly find useful.

With so many wonderful resources available to marketing writers today, especially content marketers, it takes a lot to stand out above the crowd. But in Ann Handley's "Every Writes," she delivers one of the most useful pieces I've seen.

Valuable even for seasoned writers

You might ask yourself why you need another book on writing - particularly if you're already comfortable with writing mechanics and processes. I asked myself that same question. But I bought this book because I enjoy Ann Handley's writing and figured I'd learn something.

Here are a few of the reasons I found the book valuable:

It offers well-articulated rules for the next time I have to explain my edits to others.
Some grammar rules I know by intuition rather than by rote. Ann offers pithy explanations of those. She’s also gathered data on the ideal length for website text lines and paragraphs. You may find this helpful when justifying your ruthless edits.

I learned fun new words and facts
I did not know the terms mondegreen or eggcorn (misheard terms that gain a life of their own). My life is richer for the existence of these two words.

New tools and resources!
Ann has done a great job of curating a collection of tools for writers. I have only started exploring these resources. For example, did you know about the site 750words.com to help you write at least 750 words each day?

Validation and support
The final take-away for the professional writer is this: people do care. When writing for industry, it’s easy to get sucked into jargon and industry-speak. Swimming against the tide can become difficult after a while. Throughout Everybody Writes, the unifying message is that it does matter – because everybody is also a reader.

I’d recommend this book to writers at all phases of their careers and capabilities. Because while everybody writes, we all can find ways to do it better.

I've never read a more complete book on writing.

Handley thoroughly curated the best information about writing and provides a very valuable package for $12.99 (Kindle price at time of review).

You really get an immense amount of knowledge from reading about all of these different facets of writing. She teaches how you can learn how to write better by:
-weaving in natural storytelling
-understanding the philosophy behind being a good publisher of content
-using unique tactics for each platform (Twitter, Facebook, blog posts, emails, etc.)

Super readable (as expected from a book about writing and editing) and useful. I can see myself using this as a reference I can constantly refer to.

Wonderful Sequel!

I loved the story from the first book, but I struggled with the writing style and character development. This sequel expands the original story, ties up some loose ends, and the best surprise for me was how much better the character development was. The book can get fairly technical sometimes, but I like that kind of science fiction. Some of the tangents can get annoying, and the extent of the fantastical twists gets fairly complex. Ultimately, I was able to follow along enough to really dig the technical stuff and care about the characters. The story touches on so many facets of the human experience: science, religion, history, evolution, biology, physics, good vs. evil. I highly recommend reading the first book, and jumping right into this one.

Just like the first one, I borrowed the book from the Kindle Lending library, and then decided to support the author and buy a copy after the fact. Great stuff, keep it coming!

If you haven't read book one of this series, you need to do so immediately. The follow-up second book is just as good - perhaps even better than the first. Well developed characters, stunning plot twists, history, genetics, science fiction - its all here. Believe me, you won't be able to put it down.

Super story telling

I read this and After Days (The After Days Trilogy) by Scott Medbury, one after the other in three nights, they are both so good its amazing. If you love fast paced writing and unputdownable stories i give both a huge thumbs up...Atlantis Plague is a great follow up to the Gene and Mr Riddle keeps the action coming. It really was unputdownable and I so hope they decide to make the whole series into a movie or a HBO series. Don't miss it!

and how a marriage to someone like her would differ from the woman that his aunt ...

SPOILERS! Not many, but they're there.....

Nineteen year old Abigail Barrow is brought to Dr. Simon Abbott's home, by a solicitor hired by her father before his death. His choices are to either marry Abigail and take on her father's extensive debt, or, by proxy, have Abigail sent to the workhouse to pay off her father's debt over her entire (most likely, short) lifetime. Simon's decision is made when he really LOOKS at Abigail and sees how and what she really is, and how a marriage to someone like her would differ from the woman that his aunt wants him to marry....so his decision is made.

I have a small confession--the arranged/forced marriage trope is probably one of my favorites. I always have found it interesting, especially on a historical level--what women have had to go through in order to survive and to be happy. While men had more of a choice, women were at their mercy, and it was up to them to try and make something out of nothing.

One of my favorite parts about this book is how...tender Simon is. The debt that he has to pay off is mentioned only once or twice by him, in the entire book. It is irrelevant, to his relationship with Abigail. And I also liked how he got through to the root of Abigail's behavior and issues--which is rooted in how she views herself (which is not in a good light)--and reassures her....through words AND spankings. He wasn't just a Daddy who liked to hit, or to punish for his own pleasure--but also to get to the root of the problem. And I also like that he made sacrifices for towards his own money and social standing (by marrying a "nobody" who came with a ton of debt), and did it for THEIR happiness and health. It wasn't a sacrifice for him--it was something that he knew would be better for their household and relationship.

I think the author did a good job of balancing Abigail as someone who is vulnerable and shy (two character traits I identify with and love to read about), without making her seem weak. She is someone that I think every woman can identify with with--especially us shy ones.

This is probably my favorite Ava Sinclair book and I hope she does more arranged/forced marriages tropes!

From nothing..to something

Abigail Barrow, has literally lost it all, with absolutely no prospects. Her only alternative is to become the ward to a physician. With a painful upbringing,she is in her own alternate reality. Unloved and unkempt, this man is an unknown. Will she endure more pain, and no love? Dr. Simon Abbott, has a deep desire to nurture,love and dominate a particular type of woman... a little. When he is visited and told he now has a ward(he is delighted, to indulge in his deepest desires and fantasies). He accepts the terms and conditions. He never realized how his new charge really is.. uneducated in both education and the ways of sexuality(he can educate her..mold her- discipline and love and everything in between). These two are both vulnerable in there own ways. The fact that the relationship was seen as taboo, doesn't deter them from having what they both want. A strong,disciplined relationship, with love,passion and his firm hand. This has to be the best in the series. Gave the book 5, the storyline is emotional and sexy all at the same time. The characters are sweet,defiant and show plenty of passion and fire. I hope Ava breaks into another series as I would love to see more from Simon and Abigail. And the couples who were introduced in the book! If your looking for sexy spankings, salaciously decadent sex scenes and everything you can image in age play this book is for you. The best one in the series! Can't wait for more! Sky is the limit!

A sweet Victorian AP

Typically Victorian age play can be harsh, but I did not find this one to be so. I loved the romantic and sweet way this story played out. Abigail has had such a hard life and when her father dies she thinks things are only going to get worse but surprisingly she is wrong. Wrong in the best possible way as she gains a new guardian, Simon, who is smitten by her from their first meeting. Their romance starts off unexpectedly and Abigail is against it but as time and circumstances change and develop their love blooms. Great read! I received this book from Stormy Night Publications as an Advanced Reader Copy.

Andy Warhol looms larger than Alfred Stieglitz over this survey of contemporary photographers, who tend to be more preoccupied with popular and commercial imagery than traditional fine art photography. With their digital manipulations and cinematically constructed narratives, many of them unabashedly embrace flashy artifice over sober documentation. Not that Bright, a former curator of the National Portrait Gallery in London, tries to categorize the messy vitality of contemporary photography into any clearly labeled trends. She divides the 80 mostly British and American photographers into seven thematic chapters that allow for wide latitude. "Portraits," for example, includes both Zwelethu Mthethwa's straightforward images of South African migrant workers and Gillian Wearing's photos of herself dressed as several of her own family members. While Bright's own commentary follows the ponderous style adopted by curators everywhere, she gives equal room to the words of the photographers themselves, who often provide insight without even trying. Cindy Sherman, whose 1980s photographs of herself masquerading as movie stars and historical characters set the stage for much of the work in this book, says, "I didn't know where [my art] was coming from. So I thought I had better not say anything or I'd blow it." (Nov.)

A trip to 80 (good) art galleries in a single book

It is difficult to find good contemporary photography overviews -- typically, you could go to galleries or museums for several years or buy a stack of art photography books and spend days going through them -- assuming you had a strong Art background. This book offers a nice alternative and it is one of the best overviews of contemporary fine art photography available.

Aperture, a respected photography publishing house, has beautifully produced this handsome book with 80 of what they consider to be the best living and working art photographers. The selection is broad, encompasses many areas and is well organized into 7 sections from Portrait to City. Several works from each artist are presented along with a short description of an artist's Work from a curator's perspective. Even more valuable are quotations from each artist describing their Work from their perspective. This alone makes the book worth owning.

Photographers you might know; Cindy Sherman, Thomas Ruff, Gregory Crewdson, Jeff Wall, Uta Barth, Joel Sternfeld, Thomas Demand and many others are alongside people you have probably never heard of but should get to know. The coverage of the cinematic, self exploration/psychological, conceptual and to some extent digital influences presented here should be thought provoking. Clearly, the "digitalness" of photography as a medium and all that implies -- interaction and collaboration, manipulation and realism, and authenticity and authority -- is growing in importance and will no doubt be better covered in the future as those artists emerge.

There are only two omissions that would have been interesting to see included; artists such as Gerhard Richter, best known for his painting and who uses photography extensively -- and some of the newest up and comers, like Idris Khan. To be fair, those areas are rich enough to support separate books and you should not let this keep you from buying this book. Overall, this is an excellent way to quickly learn about contemporary photography and you will not be disappointed.

Seven sections are divided by photo type: portrait, landscape, fashion, etc., and each explores and contrasts methods used by artists in their genres. Not only are styles compared, but inspirations and different philosophical and artistic approaches shared. Much more than your usual photography exhibition, Art Photography Now seeks an explanation of the nature and purposes of contemporary art photographers.

2011 Edition Improved from the 2005 Edition, But Selections of Photographers and Photographs Are Not Optimal

I compared this 2011 "Revised and Expanded Edition" with the first edition of 2005. As with the first edition, the stated goal of this edition is to "explore the diverse subjects, styles and methods of the leading practitioners" of art photography. After a 12-page Introduction, the book is divided into seven sections: Portrait, Landscape, Narrative, Object, Fashion, Document, and City. A three-page essay introduces each section, which covers about 10 photographers with 1-4 pages devoted to each photographer. In these 1-4 pages are photo(s), a paragraph by the author in ALL CAPS, and a quotation from the photographer up to a few paragraphs in length. The photographers given more than two pages are AES&F, Tina Barney, Gregory Crewdson, Katy Grannan, Rut Blees Luxemburg, Susan Meiselas, Richard Misrach, Allen Sekula, Hannah Starkey, Joel Sternfeld, Larry Sultan, and Jeff Wall.

The major differences between this edition and the first edition are: (1) it's published by Thames & Hudson, not Aperture; (2) it has 240 pages and 275 illustrations, as opposed to 224 pages and 261 illustrations; (3) it's paperback, not hardcover; (4) there are new selections of photos and/or new quotations for Gregory Crewdson, Bill Henson, Candida H�fer, Justine Kurland, Boris Mikhailov, Gabriel Orozco, Mario Sorrenti, Hannah Starkey, Wolfgang Tillmans, Hellen van Meene, and Jeff Wall; and (5) there is a new "Transitions" section (pages 218-231) with subsections "Photography About Photography," "Documentary Drive," and "New Directions." Overall, then, the book is slightly improved from its predecessor.

The book is certainly well-printed and nicely laid out. However, I think it spends too much space on some photographers who are not very noteworthy, such as Camille Vivier and Jonathan De Villiers. The book could have covered photographers such as Stephen Gill, Anthony Goicolea, Rinko Kawauchi, An-My L�, Barbara Probst, Alec Soth, and Jules Spinatsch instead. Furthermore, in order to "explore... diverse subjects, styles and methods" it would have been better for one photo from each of several of a photographer's different series to be presented instead of several photos from one series. Take Sam Taylor-Wood on pages 30-31; although she is known for many series, such as "Crying Men," "Soliloquy," and "Bram Stoker's Chair," the book contains only five rather repetitive photos from her 2004 "Self-Portrait Suspended" series. Four of Richard Misrach's "On the Beach" photos appear on pages 56-59, possibly leaving the reader to wonder what his much more famous "Desert Cantos" photos look like.

With its limitations in mind, buy this book from Amazon.com!

BTW, unlike a reviewer of the first edition, I didn't miss the exclusion of artists using photography such as Gerhard Richter. Also, I disagree with another reviewer who wrote that "the work doesn't vary much from artist to artist... [and it is] trendy, elitist, high-priced commodity under the guise of art." Finally, the book gives us more than "a potpourri of unrelated photographs" as a third reviewer wrote.

Without Question the Best Book for Entrepreneurs

Since 1995 I succeeded in creating two software startups without funding and failed in others. For the past several years I've read programming books hoping to find a technical edge, and entrepreneurial books to determine what I did wrong and what I must do to get it right the next time.

I concluded that more programming is pointless until I find the right idea and validate my business model, but the entire process wasn't clear to me.

Then I read, Nail It then Scale It. Complimentary to the book Boom Start, it is the best entrepreneurial book I've ever read. Within the first twenty pages I recognized my previous mistakes. Now I better understand the entire process of innovation, identifying deep customer pain, testing and validating solution hypotheses.

This book teaches the innovation and validation process from start to finish. By applying its best practices, l have the confidence I need to build the next big thing--one that delivers a simple, elegant solution that customers' want.

Five stars--I highly recommend it.

Must-read for every product innovator

Building products that people want is hard and costs lots of money (mostly because we miss the mark the first, and second, and third time around before we get it right). I read Nail It Then Scale It and it immediately resonated. As an entrepreneur I find myself constantly in product development mode. The steps outlined in the book cut time (50%+) and cost (80%+) out of our product development cycle. Nail It Then Scale It doesn't dance around theory, it dives right into the nuts and bolts of identifying need, and the step-by-step process of building a great product that will sell the moment it ships. Good entrepreneurs have solid product intuition - great entrepreneurs will follow Nail It Then Scale It and find out how to nail it the first time around. Great read - strongly recommended.

Great book about pizza in NYC

Great book about pizza in NYC. Love it. I only wish it covered the Ray's on at 6th Avenue and 11th street in Manhattan. That is the slice pizza place that had lines around the block in the late 70s. I don't think that had happened before with a slice joint before that. It's important in the history. I know. I was there. Yes there "Ray's" before this one. But this Ray's started the Ray's craze. It did. It later became Famous Roios.

Fun and informative!

I'm a big fan of Peter Genovese's books and this one does not disappoint. It's full of wonderful descriptions of literally *hundreds* of pizza places in all five boroughs of NYC, plus it has lots of great photos.

I had the pleasure of attending a "slide show" talk given by Mr. Genovese on July 17 and it was terrific; really informative and very humorous.

Bad Dog!

Winston Churchill popularised the phrase 'the Black Dog', although it had been round for many years before. In a way a black dog, hunting by moonless night in a blackened wood is quite possibly the best metaphor for depression. It hunts silently, stealthily, approaching its victim unseen and unnoticed until it's too late. No one is immune from it - actors, politicians, homeless people, emergency personnel, middle class families, children, the Strong, the weak, etc.

But in between clever euphemism and metaphor and personal experience is the cavernous gulf of ignorance. Even family members who love and care deeply for a person with depression can find themselves without understanding - bewildered by what from the outside seems such a minor thing. The gulf in understanding, the lack of support from people who just 'don't understand', can lead to the unconsenting and unwilling owner of a Black Dog to feel isolated and alone and utterly abandoned. The Black Dog wants nothing more than to keep family and friends away, to make the owner believe that no one does or even can understand what it's like. That no one cares and there is no helping hand. And once there in the cold dark lair of the beast it saps the life from it's victim.

But it is not true that no-one can understand - survivors know what it is like. Survivors like Johnstone. After years of struggle with his back dog he wrote this short picture book. And what a book it is. He puts simply and vividly what it is like for those who must struggle every day. How the Black Dog colours the world and freezes the soul, destroying joy and chasing away happiness. But he doesn't stop there. If the first half is for the family the second half is for the owners themselves. He show how with determination, exercise, meditation, and support the owner can shrink the fat lazy mutt from a snarling Cerberus into a shivering little purse dog attached firmly to a leash by the owners side.

As Johnstone says in his dedications "and a very small, begrudging, thank you to the black dog, without whom this book would not be possible. Bad Dog!"(less)

The book is a cute way to describe depression, but I don't think it is really helpful. It may be something to show family or friends but I don't think anyone will get the seriousness of depression from it.

The presentation makes it ideal for any coffee table to bring the subject of depression into mainstream society in an accessible and approachable format.
