Very well written

As a modern textbook in the theory of relativity, this book is rare, in that its goal is to give the reader a conceptual introduction to the theory, and not just mathematical formalism. The author also does not hesitate to include some philosophical argumentation wherever needed. It is written for the advanced undergraduate, and will prepare such a reader for more advanced reading in the subject.
The first chapter of the book is the best, for it is a comprehensive discussion of the origins of the theory of relativity as one that rejected the assertion that space and time were absolute. The author also gives an interesting historical discussion of Lorentz's ether theory, wherein Lorentz hypothesized that bodies moving through the ether undergo a contraction, and he discovered a time transformation that implied that clocks moving through the ether run slow. As the author points out, Lorentz thought such considerations were purely mathematical, and not important physically. In addition, in the section on Mach's principle, the author discusses briefly the work of Dennis Sciama who showed that the 1872 gravitational theory of F. Tisserand included Mach's principle. I was not aware of this work, and it motivated me to do further reading on the subject. The author also gives several examples to show that Mach's principle is not physically vacuous, but has observational consequences.
Chapter two overviews the kinematic consequences of the special theory of relativity. The most interesting part of this discussion was the section on the formulation of special relativity without assuming the invariance of the speed of light. The author shows that the principle of relativity implies that either all inertial frames are related by Galilean transformations, or all are related by Lorentz transformations with the same (postive) velocity (squared).
A discussion of optical effects follows in chapter 3. One unexpected and interesting result in this chapter is that a moving sphere has a circular outline to all observers because of length contraction.
Some of the mathematical formalism needed in special relativity is overviewed in chapter four. The class of four-vectors and four-tensors is defined, and the light cone geometry discussed in detail.
The relativistic mechanics of point particles is covered in chapter five. Such a theory is cast in the language of four-vectors, and the author explains nicely the mass-energy equivalence, analyzes scattering from a relativistic standpoint in the center of momentum frame, and shows how Newtonian mechanics is altered in the relativistic realm. He also spends a little time on relativistic continuum mechanics, via the energy tensor of the simplest continua: dust.
The connection between relativity and electrodynamics is outlined in chapter six. The material is standard and found in most books on relativity.
The author begins the study of general relativity in chapter seven with some elementary considerations of the differential geometry of curved surfaces and also Riemannian spaces. The author endeavors, rightfully, to explain the mathematics in a way that is intuitive as possible, rather than hitting the reader with highly abstract formalism.
He then presents the mathematica foundations of general relativity in chapter eight. After a brief review of tensor calculus, the author considers the gravitational field equations in a vacuum, emphasizing their nonlinearity. This is followed by a detailed discussion of the famous Schwarzschild solution. In addition, he considers a particular exact solution of the Einstein field equations in a vacuum, namely a plane-fronted gravitational wave. Although not physical, this solution illustrates some important properties of general gravitational radiation.
The author ends the book with a fairly detailed overview of cosmology. The difficulties in the pre-relativistic cosmology are discussed, one of the more interesting being the consideration of the Newtonian gravitational field inside a cavity resulting from the removal of a finite sphere from a static universe. Recognizing that Poisson's equation does not have a constant solution led to the alteration of the Newtonian potential and thus a modification of the Poisson equation. As the author observes, this move to get a static Newtonian universe is formally the same as what Einstein did via the introduction of the cosmological constant in his field equations (also to get a static universe). The author also considers the Robertson-Walker, Milne, and Friedman universe, and compares these to what is known observationally.

subtle approach to SR and GR

Although not the most comprehesive text on
the subject (see Thorne's tome, Gravitation),
Essential Relativity is perhaps the most
fulfilling book from which to learn both special and general relativity on a graduate school level.
Flipping through the pages, one cannot help
but notice that it often reads like a novel.
For the student or the adventurous, a wide
variety of problems are found in an appendix.
The author's background in differential geometry
is very evident in his excellent explanations
of difficult concepts.

Good for its discussions and "relativistic intuitions"

This is a good book to learn the basic concepts behind relativity beyond the popular science books. It is a mid-level text aimed at an audience familiar with mathematics/physics but less inclined to go through something more comprehensive like Weinberg. Its value is largely in its discussion rather than rigorous derivations and proofs. In fact, it is quite lacking in the mathematical discussion (results occasionally show up with little introduction or explanation). What popular science tries to convey via hand waving and the advanced texts ignore (due to their "philosophical rather than scientific relevance"), this book attempts to correctly explain. Examples would be discussions regarding inertial frames, Mach's principle, and the general physical/philosophical/practical implications of seemingly "benign" results.

I would not recommend this book to learn general relativity (as opposed to special relativity), however. It glosses over several mathematical preliminaries, especially those of tensor calculus. Once the concepts and strategies are understood, the best way to learn general relativity is directly via tensor calculus. Lawden's concise book in this case (Introduction to Tensor Calculus, Relativity and Cosmology) is undoubtedly one of the best investments to make in this regard. Otherwise, Weinberg is, as mentioned previously, the veritable bible of relativity and related cosmology but is not definitely not something to read sitting in front of the fireplace.

Also be warned, the hardcover copy is of quite poor quality. The pages seem low grade recycled (nothing wrong with that though) and the print is blurry (not crisp).

Presence Enlightens

Stephen Wangh presents elements of teaching that do not have simple answers. He dives right into the sticky areas, the uncomfortable issues, that create inner conflict in the teacher. The sorts of things all teachers struggle with and can't talk about. By creating space for the issues to unpack he sets the stage for your own drama to find its feet in the world and learn to walk. This is not a book of quick fixes but an invitation to deep inner exploration of both self and student, which gives you the ability to begin to create your own maps of human relationship and to pass that skill on to your students. It's an invitation to be present and to be human and to be yourself. Well worth the price. It applies to all teachers and all students.

As a student I have always had issues with all my teachers. The teacher student relationship is complex and intimate in unexpected ways. Essentially as a student I am often reweaving my soul. I am grateful for clarity in vulnerability that helps me see the other side. I highly recommend this for students too.

I absolutely loved this book. I have been teaching for more than 30 years and this was the first book I encountered that focused exclusively on teaching theatre. I fully appreciated the tone and approach taken in the book by the author. A great read!

Fantastic Reading for the Latin Student

I just happened to run across this book the other day, and have not put it down. It has relly given me a great way to look up phrases and termonology that I had been searching for. Please do not use the online translators, they are pure garbage and will not gine you the correct grammar or translation for the phrase you are looking for. This book does not have them all, but it does have many, many that you may have seen or heard over the years.
I would recommend it for anyone who has an interest in Latin at all, or for the student of Latin who is starting out. You can increase your Latin vocabulary tremendously right now if you really wanted just by reading this book.
A lot of fun and a must have.

About the Author

Donald W. Black, M.D., is Professor, Director of Residency Training, and Vice Chair for Education, Department of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City, Iowa. He is a graduate of Stanford University, where he received his undergraduate degree, and the University of Utah School of Medicine. He received his psychiatric training at the University of Iowa, where he now serves as Director of Residency Training and Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Black is an authority on personality disorders and impulsive behavior. He has written several books, including Bad Boys, Bad Men -- Confronting Antisocial Personality Disorder (Sociopathy) and DSM-5 Guidebook (with Jon E. Grant). He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and Past President of the American Academy of Clinical Psychiatrists.

Nancy C. Andreasen, M.D., Ph.D., is the Andrew H. Woods Chair, Department of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City, Iowa. She received a Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Nebraska, and later, a medical degree from the University of Iowa, where she also trained in psychiatry. She is one of the world's leading authorities on schizophrenia and was a pioneer in the application of neuroimaging techniques to the study of major mental illnesses. She is the author of numerous books including The Creating Brain: The Neuroscience of Genius, The Broken Brain: The Biological Revolution in Psychiatry, and Brave New Brain: Conquering Mental Illness in the Era of the Genome. Dr. Andreasen received the National Medal of Science in 2000, America's highest award for scientific achievement. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science. She served as Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Psychiatry for 13 years.

A somewhat dry, but useful compendium

This is a short and sweet introduction to the practice of psychiatry. The book clearly targets medical students and psychiatrists although I used the 5th edition to review for my psychiatric nurse practitioner board exam. This book is simply written and can definitely be read cover to cover in a few sittings. This is not an extensive reference book, but more of a broad overview. The information provided about each disorder is similar but more succinct than what is provided in the actual DSM 5. I thought the material was presented in a somewhat dry, laconic manner, very much like the DSM. More importantly though, the text was a useful, compact text that can accompany a student during their clinical rotations.

The book is divided into three parts:
1. Background (15% of book)
2. Psychiatric Disorders (67%)
3. Special Topics (18%)

The background section includes a chapter on diagnosis and classification, interviewing and assessment, and the neurobiology of genetics of mental illness. The psychiatric disorders section follows the same structure and organization of the DSM 5. For each diagnosis, the authors discuss diagnostic criteria, epidemiology, etiology, course, clinical findings, differential diagnosis, and clinical management. Occasionally there will be a short case example. The special topics section includes a chapter on psychiatric emergencies, legal issues, behavioral/cognitive/psychodynamic treatments, psychopharmacology and electroconvulsive therapy. Each chapter includes self-assessment questions and an extensive bibliography.

There are very few images, all in greyscale. The font is a good size. The DSM 5 diagnostic criteria are listed in table format for each disorder. There is an excellent glossary in the back of the book that you can use to quiz yourself. The book is most appropriate for individuals being introduced to psychiatry for the first time. I even think it would be appropriate for primary care providers or a supplement to an undergraduate psychiatric nursing class.

Easy read, great for rotations

Great book. I found it really helpful during my psych rotations as well as reviewing for step 1. There is however, a lot of information useful for clinicians that can be skipped over for med students (DSM5 criteria and what must be met etc).

Wonderful intro book

As a second year medical student, this book was recommened by a professor whose opinion I trust, so I actually bought a "required" book for once. I was not disappointed, as this book was thorough, well organized, and easy to read. A great introduction read, at times I wished it had gone into a bit more depth, but then again patient videos are always better than text. The updated DSM-5 information was accurate the times I cross-checked it.

I read another review that said it was bit "dry", I can see how one might think this - however I feel that this is better than most textbooks I have read for school. I think that this would be a good fit for undergraduate or graduate level students who are just getting started with psych.

Again a copy from the Bootstrap online manual! Don't buy!

There seems to be a curse on the Twitter Bootstrap books, because this is the 3th book about it I have seen that is total rubbish!

This is for the author:

* I don't need to be explained what Twitter Bootstrap is (if I did not know that I would not buy the book in the first place!).

* I don't need a copy of the Twitter Bootstrap website instructions!

Most important things like the implementation of LESS and CSS (the main reason that people will purchase a book about Bootstrap!) are just a little
bit or not explained.

I have years of experience with CSS and also CSS3. But what I want to know is how to edit the CSS or do you expect people to understand how the 9000 lines CSS
all work with no instructions.

This problem occurs every time someone with no real deep Bootstrap experience decides to write a book about it.

Just read the official docs

I am not a fan of this book. It contains mostly what's already available in the online documentation. I kept expecting the author to get into topics of how to use the framework effectively, or good design choices of things that work well with the framework.

Instead it's just a cookbook of the different elements that bootstrap makes available, curiously in almost the same order and similar content that the official docs make available.

I expect more depth from an o'Reilly book. Something that is going to help me make good choices when implementing. Something that is going to help me understand the "why" and "how" not just the "what" and "where".

Cheryl Glenn is Liberal Arts Research Professor of English and Women's Studies at The Pennsylvania State University. Glenn's rhetorical scholarship has earned her many awards, including three National Endowment for the Humanities awards, the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC)'s�Richard Braddock Award, and Rhetoric Review's Outstanding Essay Award. She has served as President of the Coalition of Women Scholars in the History of Rhetoric and Composition,�a member of the CCCC Executive Committee, and Chair of the Modern Language Association (MLA) Division on the History and Theory of Rhetoric and Composition. She spends her summers teaching at the Bread Loaf School of English.

Having practiced holistic therapy for over 12 years, I am aware of how books on similar subject matters contain conflicting or complicated information.
This is not one of those books. There are gems of truth contained here, among some beautiful photos & quotes .
Simple, yet key contributions to the field of healing and health.
Zoran often communicates in the style of " �$%* my dad says " by Justin Halpern, which I personally find to be a refreshing reprieve from some of the more ethereal stuff out there.
A valuable introduction to both those wanting to help others achieve their full potential, & those determined to achieve it.
This is a simple, powerful modality, whose stripped down protocols produce results i've never seen the likes of before. I wish everyone in the world could know about it, especially those in areas of poverty. Thank-you Zdenko and Zoran. (PS could we pls have this on Kindle) ~ devin dyason

Essential Basics of Zdenko Domancic's Bioenergy Healing Method

I've read this book Several times. I've also read the other reviews here on Amazon.

The book does not teach You the method. The author gives one a basic understanding of what the method is and is not, as well as, other information on Your responsibility in using the method when You have learned it. And additionally, some basics that are good to know in being a vessel for healing.

We all have different personalities. What 1 thing flew off the pages at me while reading this book, is the author's (i.e., Zoran Hochstatter) passion, and his immense respect for this type of energy healing's creator, Zdenko Domancic. Zoran explains the premise behind Zdenko Domancic's method of healing. His respect for the creator and the method, as well as his feeling of responsibility in teaching this method is obvious. His explanation is from his perspective as a professional and I respect that. His personality does not offend me because we all are what we are as far as personalities go, and you can take them or leave them. It matters not to me. It is Zoran's dedication and devotion to Zdenko's method and the responsibility I feel he feels which is admirable.

This book contains All Meat. There is no fluff. Zoran could've made this book many more pages longer with Lots of fluff and he didn't. Thank You Zoran! He gives You the short and skinny underlying this method.

I'm taking the Level I class next week. I'm SO Glad that I ordered and have read the book. I feel better prepared for the class. I will read it at least a few more times before I take the class, since like a Good Movie, I get something out of it every time.

If $20 is too much for You to spend on a book, how many times is that to Starbuck's, Panera Bread, or some other eatery/coffee shop? And You don't get the immensely powerful information in those places that Zoran lays out for You in this book. Thank You Zoran for writing this book. I am Very Grateful to have read it prior to taking Your Level I course. If You want to check out Zoran's seminars go to: [...] He teaches Zdenko Domancic's Bioenergy Healing Method in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. Level I teaches You the method so You can start after You've attended the seminar. Level II is Distance Healing. And Level III You get to work with Zoran. But don't take my word for it, go to his site! : )

Refreshing view of Energy Healing

I am a trained Zendko Domanic Method healer, and 3 Chair's author, Mr. Hochstatter, is one of the foremost acolytes of Zendko. I found the book's philosophy true to the Zendko Domanic Method. Both are no nonsense stick to the basics and let the energy do the work. An important point in the Domanic method is that at the end of the first course you have all the knowledge to go out and help your friends. Nothing else required. By necessity it is simple and clean in teaching and practice. This sets it apart from other modalities.

3 Chairs expresses Mr. Hochstatter's frustrated view of the alternate healing world's lack of simplicity, with all the energy modalities vying for our attention, so many who seek wish to mish mash them all together - which would be akin to mashing the world's religions - and picking what they want from each. It's an idyllic notion, but not one that is effective.

3 Chairs is a direct, free flowing not quite chain of consciousness work and is worth exploring as is the method itself. It is also an interesting view of the healing world and what it is really all about.
