Viper-jewel in Cleopatra's Crown
By C. Middleton
~Sex, Art, and American Culture~ strikes down from the heavens lika a thunderbolt from Olympus, disturbing our received notions of popular culture, high and low art, and particularly tertiary education with such flair, that you will never view the world in the same way. Camille Paglia is a breath of fresh air; a provocative slayer of highbrow, smug, one-dimensional academics, who, over the last twenty five years, have been waving French Critical theory around like it was a major break through in western thought. She treats these 'gurus' of French academe, i.e., Derrida, Lacan, and Foucault like purveyors of a death fog, confusing all and sunder with their 'playful language', their philosophy of destruction or 'deconstruction', and reveals the end result of this post structuralist cancer: 'Academics with the souls of accountants...' an alarming ignorance of history and true scholarship, and a specialized factory line mentality in undergraduate studies.
All of the essays in this wonderful collection sparkle with erudition, honesty and guts. I was actually startled by Paglia's frankness, power and arresting prose style. A friend, who suggested I read this book, summed Paglia up quite nicely, "She has turned cultural studies into a contact sport." It's about time. Having been on the receiving end of the Derrida, Lacan, Foucault triad, as an idealistic, hungry for knowledge undergraduate, I too was swept-up in the French theory furore, anally strutting around campus like some initiated witch from a secret coven. History has shown that the attainment of alleged esoteric knowledge has always given us a false sense of power: a feeling that you are somehow a member of the elite, above the fray, someone special. After a few years, however, the illusion crumbled, and I realized that to view language as nothing more than 'meaningless play'; that, at bottom, all this so-called 'rebelliousness' was simply empty rhetoric and posing claptrap, and really has no use in the world of physical reality. I needed to do something, so switched the game plan, and began reading the canon. Suddenly, the penny dropped, and connections began to manifest. Homer's ~The Odyssey~ changed my life and true learning began in earnest.
Another area of criticism that rang true in this important book is the move towards specialization in the halls of humanities departments across the globe. Paglia explains this shift as a self-promoting defence mechanism for academics without courage. I don't know about the teacher side of the story, but from a student's perspective, specialization has been devastating in some instances. For example, a friend of mine has a degree in 'cultural studies' hanging proudly on his wall, and his knowledge of Elizabethan literature is profound. Ironically, however, his knowledge of popular culture is next to nil. How can anyone claim higher knowledge in cultural studies without an appreciation of ~The Simpsons~ or the political ramifications of Mickey Mouse. Because of specialization, Paglia believes universities have been churning out cultural morons with limited knowledge of the world. It is a dangerous situation. To fix the problem, Paglia suggests an interdisciplinary approach to education, which includes the sciences, art history, comparative religion and politics as well as literature. Generally, learning of our rich past is about making connections, encompassing all the disciplines from the beginning of western knowledge to present time.
Camille Paglia is an academic rabble-rouser; an astute observer of popular culture and a no holds barred bitch with a well-argued point of view. Her understanding of cinema and their gods, i.e., Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor and Alfred Hitchcock reveals deep insight into the American psyche: a pleasure to read.
The one criticism I have of this book is Paglia's feeble views on rape. Her argument that "if you look for trouble you'll get it'; a young girl wearing a thong and a see-through dress at an all male fraternity party is merely asking for it, is a narrow and superficial perspective. What about the eighty year old woman, living in the same street for years, walking to the baker and the butcher, known by everybody, to be found brutally raped and beaten for no apparent reason. Was she asking for it? Hardly. However contentious Paglia's arguments on this issue may seem, they smell of eastern wealth, a target market for her publisher to shake-up an intellectually frustarated clientele. The issue of rape goes far beyond the privleged schoolgirl scenario.
That said, ~Sex, Art, and American Culture is the viper-jewel in Cleopatra's crown, instructing the fat - comfort zone - Mark Anthony's of American academe to get a grip, pull their fingers out and follow their instincts.
This book is highly recommended.

An effective attack on PC
By Professor Joseph L. McCauley
Paglia writes from a standpoint of anti-PC/anti-postmodernist philosophy. The weakness of her book is that it is dedicated to what John Berger has called 'the instant culture', the culture where postmodernism has cut us off from the past while the media cuts us off daily from the future. For a study of the interaction of the media with the outcast elements of the instant culture from the standpoint of PC/postmodernism see Joshua Gamson's "Freaks Talk Back". Both Paglia and Gamson are TV addicts. Both praise the role of the media in the instant culture. One is Foucauldian, the other is not.
Paglia's intellectual contribution comes from her anti-postpodernism. PC is an instant-practice in postmodernist society that creates/spreads the pseudo-disease called victimization. America has, through PC, become a nation of victims. See also "Dumbing Down our Kids", by Charles J. Sykes, for the role played by schools in creating 'victims'. Paglia's anti-postmodernist essay 'Junk bonds and Corporate Raiders' is worth reading because it's a very effective attack on postmodernism/PC, and predates the Sokal hoax by about five years. Her MIT lecture is also worth reading. The rest of the book, in praise of the instant-culture created by modern capitalism, which has largely destroyed the chance of nontrivial culture within America, includes a lot of horn-tooting for Paglia by Paglia and does not shed light on anything worth knowing. Paglia likes to emphasize her Italian roots, but the stark contrast with John Berger's writing, where peasants do not behave as victims and capitalism is not praised for what it has done, is worth noting.

Mesmerizing, but...
By A Customer
There is something intoxicating about Camille Paglia. It's partly her prose, which manages to be both blunt and extravagant; she'd make a good political speech writer. She writes in slick, easily digested proclamations that both dramatize and grossly over-simplify the world - which is gratifying to read initially but not particuarly enlightening in the long run. She seduces partly because of her palpable love of art and her unquestionable erudition; certainly, as an English student, it's refreshing to read someone who approaches art with an unabashed sense of awe and pleasure, which IS often missing from present academe. Anf she also seduces because she often interprets culture at face-value, and it's always fun in some way to have every superficial prejudice indulged, and all human history reduced to a larger-than-life cartoon, all neat dichotomies between civilization and nature, brutish, brilliant men and enchanting, passive women, Apollo and Dionysius...
But, as you read on, you become aware you're in the presence of some exotic species of maniac. Her bullying style initially seduces and finally repulses. It's Camille, Camille, Camille - and as you read through these essays, you begin to mutter to yourself, "If she refers to "my Sixties generation", her Italian heritage or her own intellectual virtuosity one more time, I'm going to...."
Her obsessional loathing of the feminist establishment seems finally self-indulgent. She seems to believe that feminist ideology is this pernicious disease that is spreading out of control, polluting the minds of the young and vulnerable and poisoning human relationships, when in actuality, feminist thought is nowhere near the orthodoxy she makes it out to be. It is the status quo in the hallowed halls of universities, perhaps, but not in the real world. Her constant, immature caricaturing of "the feminists" actually prevents the very debate she says she wants to ignite, and finally just plays into the hands of the very people who were hostile to the idea of women's liberation to begin with.
She's at her best when she's elucidating the mysterious allure of a particular icon or piece of art. She's at her worst when she's making absurdly simplistic assertions about date rape. Still, she obviously gets off on playing the devil's advocate, and she can certainly make you laugh.
Read her to feel angry, and to revive your sense of pleasure and wonder in art and culture. Her football-stadium-size ego pervades everything she writes - it's almost like she wants to footnote each sentence with "You ARE aware I'm the authority on the entire human experience, aren't you? Good. GOOD. Just so we're clear." It's revolting and maddening and completely disarming, all at once.
Read it, though. You won't feel indifferent.

The good doctor was ahead of his time!
By James Keeton
This is a review for "The Anabolic Diet" by Dr DiPasquale. This eating template is also known as "The Anabolic Solution" and the "Metabolic Diet."

About the Author:

Dr. Di Pasquale at one time held world records in 5 different weight classes. Not only does he know what he is talking about academically but he practiced what he preached. He holds an honors degree in biological science, majoring in molecular biochemistry and genetics, and a medical degree from University of Toronto. He is certified as a Medical Review Officer by the Medical Review Officer Certification Council, and as a Master of Fitness Sciences by the International Sports Sciences Association. He's the only Canadian to ever total (in the 3 main lifts) 10 times his body weight

Some Additional History:

Vince Gironda AKA "Iron Guru" was a bodybuilder from the 50s that championed this style of dieting. From watching interviews of some of the "old timers" who used to train with the greats at golds gym; Arnold and his posse would pretty much eat like this (high fat and protein with a cheat day on the weekends) (Not over his whole career). Other notable past proponents of this type of diet are: Charles Poliquin, Chad Waterbury, and Rob Faigin.

Basics:

It's a high fat diet with a weekly carb load. Weekdays your carbs are under 30g. You become fat adapted and function well on fats after a few weeks of eating this way. Some have a hard time with the initiation phase, however, after they become fat adapted they tend to have more energy in general and "feel like they're running cleaner."

Guidelines: (Can vary some per the individual)
Weekday = 60-65% Fat, 30-35% Protein,

The Anatomy of National Fantasy: Hawthorne, Utopia, and Everyday Life, by Lauren Berlant

Examining the complex relationships between the political, popular, sexual, and textual interests of Nathaniel Hawthorne's work, Lauren Berlant argues that Hawthorne mounted a sophisticated challenge to America's collective fantasy of national unity. She shows how Hawthorne's idea of citizenship emerged from an attempt to adjudicate among the official and the popular, the national and the local, the collective and the individual, utopia and history.

At the core of Berlant's work is a three-part study of The Scarlet Letter, analyzing the modes and effects of national identity that characterize the narrator's representation of Puritan culture and his construction of the novel's political present tense. This analysis emerges from an introductory chapter on American citizenship in the 1850s and a following chapter on national fantasy, ranging from Hawthorne's early work "Alice Doane's Appeal" to the Statue of Liberty. In her conclusion, Berlant suggests that Hawthorne views everyday life and local political identities as alternate routes to the revitalization of the political and utopian promises of modern national life.

Spine tingling and creepy, gruesome diary entries written in the ultimate horror setting; a haunted inn.
By Dark Faerie Tales
Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales

Quick & Dirty: Spine tingling and creepy, gruesome diary entries written in the ultimate horror setting; a haunted inn.

Opening Sentence: Dear Detective Umbridge, I first met Trevor Donald at a coffee shop a few months ago.

The Review:

What the…?! Seriously, this is why I avoid horror books, they freak the daylights out of me. The story is told in diary entries, annotated by a detective and a script writer and supplemented with letters connected to the story. An interesting way to tell it, for sure, and if you did manage to lose interest, the creepy diary entries would wake you up in an instant!

Waking Noelle comes across as a severely angry /troubled teenager with almost schizophrenic behaviour. One minute she’s annoyed with her dad, then she wants to kill him, then wishes she was never born. Her anger progresses into a twisted disturbing story that ends in her gorging the skin off her head. Disgusting. If I ever felt sorry for the girl, I was immediately sickened by her yucky habit of picking her head until it bleeds. To make it worse, she describes it in such vivid detail in her diary, making it sound like she really enjoys this habit of hers; it bordered on obsession!

Sleeping Noelle is a different creature altogether. It’s so scary to think that she could have been responsible for hurting those cats, and that a different version of her writes in the diary when she’s asleep. That loss of control would be terrifying, especially since she doesn’t recall anything in the morning and can only rely on what she wrote (and the blood on her hands).

You just want me to feel bad. You had me write that stuff down so you could judge me. So I could judge me. Quit building a judge into my brain, I don’t want it. I don’t wanna judge myself this way.
This is why little girls have diaries. Diaries are worst enemies disguised as best friends. You make us write in you, you make us tell you everything, then you TURN ON US.
I’m sorry. It’s not you.

I wonder what happened to Alf, because presumably everyone in the inn that night was murdered so Alf must have died too… but wasn’t Alf sleeping upstairs and the ‘thing’ that kills them all made its way from downstairs, right, leaving Noelle as the last victim? Well, that’s the version according to her diary and who knows how much truth and reality that contains?

For whatever reason Olivia didn’t have any eyebrows. Based on two overly active mounds of flesh above her eyes, she guessed where her eyebrows should be and drew new ones on each morning. Because of this Alf found it very difficult to speak with her face to face. He couldn’t tell if she was mad or sad or happy and he found it unsettling.

I didn’t want to like this book at all. It’s a freaky horror story; not my preferred kind of read! Despite all that, the fact that I couldn’t stop reading, or that I was literally screaming at the kids (in my head) not to bring out the Ouija board, or go to the basement shows how addictive the story really is. The Boy Meets Girl Massacre is a creepy read, perfect for fans of gory details.

Notable Scene:

Birth and death are always sure, each in fact, as sure as the other. So how is birth a miracle? Miracles are supposed to be rare, extraordinary. Not something that happens every day.
And if birth is such a miracle, why is death a tragedy?

FTC Advisory: Flux provided me with a copy of The Boy Meets Girl Massacre. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

Creepy, disgusting and thrilling at the same time
By Majanka
After reading and reviewing The Lonely by Ainslie Hogarth, which I thought was an amazing read, I just had to read her second book. The books aren’t related, nor are they part of the same series, but they do have some of the same qualities. Both books have a magical surrealism theme going on, making the reader question what is real and what is just in the character’s minds. I love those types of books, so naturally, I loved this one too.

The book starts out rather cryptic. Noelle and her best friend Alf take on summer nightshift jobs at the infamous Boy Meets Girl Inn – a place where several decades ago, some grisly murders happened. Murders that included the perp eating people. Yep, they’re that horrific. So Noelle and Alf go to the inn hoping to find signs of a haunting, and of course, to invite all their friends (and the kids from school they just want to impress) to the Anniversary – of the murder, of course. Or of the last murder to be precise. But while some strange things happen, like the bathroom light turning on all by itself, Noelle doesn’t really get scared. She has al ot more to worry about – for instance, the diary she started, and that now seems to have a life of its own. Then there’s her Dad’s illness, which makes it almost impossible for him to go out or take care of himself, and leaves her in the tough position of having to be his personal nurse twenty-four/seven. Then there’s also the sore spot on the back of her head. She’s been touching it for years, sometimes even scratching it, but the last few weeks, the pain has been getting worse, and going into patterned space (which usually helps) doesn’t do the trick anymore….

The book has an unique format. We start out with an introduction to the case – apparently the bodies of Noelle and some of her friends were found after a massacre at the inn, and Noelle’s diary is the only piece of evidence that might explain what happened. A film maker bought the diary from a retired detective, in an effort to turn it into a movie. Then we get Noelle’s diary, and from then on, apart from some annotations (like the title suggests), it’s Noelle doing the talking.

I loved the unique format, and I think that, along with the author’s unique writing style, is what worked for me the most. The story isn’t all that original – a haunted inn, a murder/massacre – but the author adds so many cool and fun elements that it reads unlike anything I’ve read before, making it unique. We get the sore spot on Noelle’s head, and wonder what the connection is. Is Noelle seeing ghosts, or is she going crazy? Then in her diary, Noelle says some pretty intense stuff, and again, the reader is left to wonder. The book has a high level of gore though, but for me, I didn’t really mind, if anything, it made Noelle appear more realistic that she talked about gory stuff too.

If you don’t mind books that’ll have you scratching your head (hopefully not on a sore spot, like Noelle) and leave you baffled at the end, and have a high creep factor and some gore, then you should absolutely, definitely, no doubt in my mind, read The Boy Meets Girl Massacre (Annotated). It’s amazing.
I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

THIS BOOK IS CREEEEEPTASTIC!!!!
By quibecca
Let me start by saying this book should not be read on the Kindle. In my opinion. With all the annotations I think it kind of took away from the book having to follow it on the Kindle. I think it would have been far scarier reading it while it happened in a "real" book. BUT, having said that, this book is CREEPTASTIC. it's definitely for older readers, in my opinion. It has a lot of language, and it's very creepy, and graphic in some places. It was so good. SO Creepy!

Noelle and her friend Alf work at Boy Meets Girl Inn, where things go bump in the night. I mean, really go bump. While things are going on Noelle has her diary going so she can remember the things that happen while she is on her night shift at the inn.

She and her friend Alf have some very interesting nights at the hotel. They want to host a party on the night of the anniversary of some "real" killing that happened there. Who does that? I think the scariest think I did as a teenager was play "ghost in the graveyard" in the actual graveyard. I thought that was scary. Having a party in an inn where some very horrible, ghoulish murders had actually happened would probably be more than I could handle.

Noelle, has a lot of things going on in her life. We find that out during her writings in her diary. I think the diary is creepier than what is actually happening in the book.

I ended up finishing this book in the day because I had to quit reading it before bed. I love scary books, just like I love scary movies, but this one really creeped me out at times. I would make my daughter make sure the doors were locked...hehe! Seriously this was such a great, scary book.

I do not like all the language in the book, but in all honesty I was totally involved in every aspect of this book that the language only bothered me sometimes. I just want people to be aware that it is there.

I cannot even really tell you much about it without giving something away. It's the little things that make the whole book what it is. Exciting, scary, interesting, page turning awesomeness!

We Are What We Pretend to Be: The First and Last Works, by Kurt Vonnegut

Called “our finest black-humorist” by The Atlantic Monthly, Kurt Vonnegut was one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. Now his first and last works come together for the first time in print, in a collection aptly titled after his famous phrase, We Are What We Pretend To Be.

Written to be sold under the pseudonym of “Mark Harvey,” Basic Training was never published in Vonnegut’s lifetime. It appears to have been written in the late 1940s and is therefore Vonnegut’s first ever novella. It is a bitter, profoundly disenchanted story that satirizes the military, authoritarianism, gender relationships, parenthood, and most of the assumed mid-century myths of the family. Haley Brandon, the adolescent protagonist, comes to the farm of his relative, the old crazy who insists upon being called The General, to learn to be a straight-shooting American. Haley’s only means of survival will lead him to unflagging defiance of the General’s deranged (but oh so American, oh so military) values. This story and its 30ish author were no friends of the milieu to which the slick magazines’ advertisers were pitching their products.

When Vonnegut passed away in 2007, he left his last novel unfinished. Entitled If God Were Alive Today, this last work is a brutal satire on societal ignorance and carefree denial of the world’s major problems. Protagonist Gil Berman is a middle-aged college lecturer and self-declared stand-up comedian who enjoys cracking jokes in front of a college audience while societal dependence on fossil fuels has led to the apocalypse. Described by Vonnegut as, “the stand-up comedian on Doomsday,” Gil is a character formed from Vonnegut’s own rich experiences living in a reality Vonnegut himself considered inevitable.

Along with the two works of fiction, Vonnegut’s daughter, Nanette shares reminiscences about her father and commentary on these two works―both exclusive to this edition. In this fiction collection, exist Vonnegut’s grand themes: trust no one, trust nothing; and the only constants are absurdity and resignation, which themselves cannot protect us from the void but might divert.

“Vonnegut’s first and last pieces are pervaded by his trademark dark humour.”

Hudson Valley News, 10/16/13
“Written forty years apart, these two pieces share the typical Vonnegut voice. And if you love his work, you will want to add this book to your collection.”

John Shelton Ivany Top 21, Issue #434
“Turn off the electronics and put aside your contemporary crises, for what stands before us is a truly transhistorical story teller that deserves at least one read. This book should be our first, and our last, concern.”

Basic Training as a coming of age story.
By Richard E Murphy
I am 75 years old and have never read a Vonnegut book before. I only did this one because it was free on my Kindle Lending Library. I loved it, it was a charming coming of age story. It was not an anti-military satire as the leftist writer of the called it. Always keep in mind that when Estates publish books, they are trying to make money from books that the author didn't think were good enough to publish during their lifetime. In any event it was a great little book and it has encouraged me to read more Vonnegut.

Welcome to Ardennes Farm: trust no one, trust nothing...
By John Williamson
"Haley Brandon arranged his three white shirts in one corner of a deep bureau drawer, and nodded absently at the end of each of Annie's sentences. He was tired after a fitful night aboard a railroad coach, and glad that Annie was content to talk on and on without calling upon him to contribute to the conversation. She was a complete stranger to him, and not a very interesting-looking one at that."

From that second paragraph on the first page of the late Kurt Vonnegut's Basic Training, one can see that the author's signature attention to detail was already developed in this previously unpublished novella, released about 60 years after it was written. According to publisher RosettaBooks, "Basic Training" was a work rejected by the Saturday Evening Post in the late 1940's, long before the late author had become famous through works such as his absurdist 1969 classic Slaughterhouse-Five and his 1963 satirical science fiction favorite Cat's Cradle.

Haley Brandon, the teenage protagonist, ventures from New York City to the Midwest farm of his relative, retired Brigadier General William Cooley, an old loon who insists upon being called "The General." Haley wants to go to Chicago to resume his music studies; The General promises to be the enabler, though he's "as tone deaf as a sparrow." Haley is there to do earn his way, with some "good, old-fashioned work," to learn to be a good straight-shooting American under the tutelage of his older, somewhat unstable relative. He moves into the farm with Anne Cooley, his cousin in her mid-twenties, along with her younger sisters, Kitty and Hope. And there's Mr. Banghart, the farm hand in his thirties, a courtly man with vocal capabilities and with a face "shaved and scrubbed to the luster of wax apples." We have the colorful Roy Flemming, who is Kitty's suitor and wants to take her away on his "nuptial motorcycle."

The descriptions of the settings and characters will not disappoint Vonnegut fans, as they're going to be familiar, from Hope, who "walked turtle-slow to the foot of the stairs," to Mr. Banghart, whose "lungs swelled like blacksmiths' bellows" as he began to sing. This novella is filled with such rich images. But as the story move on, like a rich descriptive tapestry being woven, it becomes clear that The General's promises may not what they appear to be. Haley's only method of survival will lead him to tenacious defiance of The General's increasingly delusional and authoritarian principles. There are surprises and there are secrets, and some of those are dark.

Vonnegut's "Basic Training" is a fascinating yet intensely disheartened story, one that derides authoritarianism, military values, relationships, parental rules and most of the expected traditions of the family from that era. The late author was good at that, and one can see from this early work that he had already honed his skills of which fans or his work are familiar.

As the book description noted, this work was penned to be sold under the author's alias of Mark Harvey yet it was never published in Vonnegut's lifetime. A little online research reveals that in the late 1940s, the author was working at GE in Schenectady, New York, and he was freelancing short stories to various popular magazines of that time, such as Collier's and The Saturday Evening Post. He was using the pseudonyms of David Harris and Mark Harvey to keep from being caught moonlighting.

Kurt Vonnegut died in 2007, and a good number of his unpublished works remained in Indiana, where he was born. RosettaBooks picked this novella from hundreds of other works that this author's literary executor had made available, and fans can only hope that they will soon release more of them.

Humiliating & Unnecessary
By amazoncustomer115
Let me begin this review by listing my favourite Vonnegut novels---that way you can see what my standards are.

The Sirens of Titan
Mother Night
Cat's Cradle
God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater
Slaughterhouse 5
Breakfast of Champions

Kurt Vonnegut had at least 2 phases in his career as an author. The first was when he was writing safe, careful fiction for magazines, and the second was when he wrote irreverent, novel-length narratives in his flagrantly subjective style.

This book, We Are What We Pretend to Be, offers 2 items: The first, Basic Training, written in the 1940s, is a long story of about 80 pages. It was written during his magazine phase. From a technical point of view, it was written well. The sentences are constructed nicely and the story flows at a good pace. But there is nothing irreverent about the story and we do not "hear" Vonnegut's voice. It is not the least bit funny or clever. It's just a run of the mill story which he was unable to get published---and rightly so.

The second item, If God Were Alive Today, written in 2000, is presented as a NOVELLA, when in fact it is nothing more than a 1st draft of a tentative novel that Vonnegut abandoned long before he was even close to finishing it. It is appallingly stupid, lame, and not the least bit funny, and there is no way whatsoever that Vonnegut would have approved of releasing it to the public. It was clearly just a helpless, sputtering emission from a machine that couldn't stop itself from going through the motions---even though 5 of its 8 cylinders no longer worked. It was only a writer's exercise; something to do rather than watch television. He didn't have any intention of finishing it---or publishing it.

In the Foreword, written by Nanette Vonnegut, it talks about If God Were Alive Today and it says, "...there is hilarity, wisdom, and redemption along the way."
No there isn't.
Not at all.

Nanette should be red-faced with shame. From here on forward she shall be known as Tomato Vonnegut.

Talk about a rip-off...and scraping the bottom of the barrel...

And the worst thing about this book is that a brilliant title was wasted on it!

Shame on you, Tomato Vonnegut---and Vanguard Press---and all the ignorant sycophants who praise this graveyard robbery.
