Adequate production values and a serviceable reading by James Naughton cannot save this audiobook from a truly awful story that tries to pass off a rightist political manifesto with Fascist underpinnings as an entertaining thriller. The silly plot focuses on our hero, a macho U.S. Congressman, who punches out the National Security Advisor in the President's presence, spouts that slain U.S. Congressmen got what they deserved, calls Congressmen who oppose his agenda "pansies," and, finally, joins a plot to kill another Fed with assassins who just happen to include an old Marine buddy and the Congressman's own grandfather. The assassins are all just good Americans, demanding at one point that the President sponsor a crime bill, of all things, or else! They are noble reformers, with a dirty job to do, rubbing out corrupt politicians. This reactionary diatribe is not recommended.?Mark Pumphrey, Polk Cty. P.L., Columbus, NC

An underwhelming first technothrilleroriginally self-published. ``One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter,'' says Michael O'Rourke to his girlfriend, thus justifying the triple murder of a US senator and a pair of congressmen. They didn't deserve to live, he further insists, guilty as they were of mismanaging their country's business. In fact, virtually all politicians--Republicans and Democrats alike--are similarly guilty. Still, the assassinations are meant not merely as punishment but as a warning. Politicians had better shape up, be upright, set aside partisanship, and balance the budget. Or else. Young Michael, the hero of Flynn's dismal fable, is himself a congressman--the exception that proves the rule. He's sore at his government and has his reasons. His parents were killed in an automobile accident; the driver of the other car, it turned out, was a drunk, a repeat offender, who should have been off the streets, in jail. Due to the aforementioned mismanagement, however, the government can't build enough prisons. Nor is this mismanagement accidental; rather, its the inevitable result of self-serving cabals and wicked conspiracies. And as a variety of the aforesaid cabals maneuver to stop the terrorists, Michael finds himself caught squarely in the middle, very much on his own. While there are conspiracies galore here, much of the novel has an undercrafted feel to it: one-dimensional types, clumsy, often careless writing. (Flynn's heroine has ``big brown eyes''; a ``freedom fighter'' has ``bright blue eyes''--information delivered frequently, each time as if newly minted.) At length, the cabal is thwarted, the once misunderstood terrorist vindicated. ``You're not going to believe what's on this,'' Michael says, handing over the tape that reveals the depth of the conspiracy. Definitely, and without a doubt one of the best books that Vince Flynn has ever written. There's more highs and lows that will keep you upset, mad and you can't stop reading.

love exists in a fine colorful book

I must have put at least 30 sticky notes in this book; as a representation of the underlying page/artist whose work resonates with me. Each page gives a short visual and/or philosophical insight into each "artist work". The author writes it in an artistic prose filled with description. I recommend reading a book on modern art theory before picking up to book to maximize studying each page if that is your goal to such question like ; is this painting or is this art? I enjoy this book for its color pages and short summary and can be completed in a few days. On the downside, it is difficult to learn and know which artist to study more of from such a summary book without knowing the theory or what the artist intended as they rarely give that away. First impression is never lasting impression.

Great Quick Reference Guide

I have "The Art Book" by Phaidon and referred to it many times over the years. "The 20th Century Art Book" is an excellent companion and serves as a wonderful reference book to the world of contemporary art. It is small, easy to carry around, packed with great information on some of the most influential artists of this century and explains why these particular artists had such an influence on the world of art today. It is by no means an exclusive and detailed critique of art, rather a great general overview. "The Art Book" and "The 20th Century Art Book" are the best, littlest coffee books you can purchase.

This book, while not quite a coffee table size is significantly sized so that the reader/viewer can appreciate the wonderfully rich color printing that is true to life and affixed to a very nice paper stock. This is a book that you will open again and again when the need comes for a generous feast of artistic eye candy.

About the Author
Dr. John Myers was raised in Lawrence, Kansas, a small "Jayhawker" town sitting in the shadow of Kansas University. After high school and three years in the army, "Dr. John's" undergraduate studies were quite diverse: basics at Bob Jones University; engineering at the University of Wisconsin; and three years of Bible study at Prairie Bible Institute in Alberta, Canada. After that, Dr. Myers earned a doctorate in Chiropractic at Palmer Chiropractic College in Davenport, Iowa.

After graduation and an extensive background in several areas of natural, non–toxic healing, Dr. Myers focused his research in the field of medical electronics. He has developed the DHSWT program (Dual–Harmonic Sound Wave Therapy), a unique bio–electronic technology with significant potential. Utilizing the DHSWT program, Dr. Myers is presently concentrating on perfecting a new approach to adult stem cell therapy. Myers' new work is significant in that it is non–invasive, completely benign, and projects the potential of an inexpensive program readily available to all who need it

voices from eternity

John Myers has obtained recorded accounts of people on the verge of dying and written the accounts unedited. The stories are so realistic that you are brought to tears and wonder. The time covered goes almost to the time of Christ. I have read the book several times and have loaned to friends only to almost fight to get it back. I would not part with my copy for any money.

Hope of life after death

The book has been well documented and showed two different types of death--"hopeful" and "without hope". Various people gave their testimonies of both types of death. This has an important message for all of us today. There are still many skeptical of life after death. This book should help the reader to see the differences between hope and without hope. Read this book with an open mind and be willing to see the messages God wants you to understand and believe. May you receive hope (if you are searching for it) as you read Voices from the Edge of Eternity.

discovered this book years ago. Wonderful message to the world. Gave it to someone without realizing it was out of print. Panicked
until I thought of Amazon. Have since order several copies through the years, passing them on to others. Always pleased with the service. Very glad to know it is back in publication.

Incredible! Astounding! On Other Hand...

In the first pages of The Spear, Ravenscroft states flat out that he considers the third eye (AKA the pineal gland) to be a valid primary source for historical research. To complicate matters even further, Ravenscroft was describing the visions of Dr. Walter Stein, his friend and teacher who was dead by the time Ravenscroft began writing.
How you feel about the Spear of Destiny depends a lot on how seriously you take Ravenscroft's ideas on the 3rd Eye. Are you ok with someone writing history as seen in someone else's mystical vision or are you more the footnotesey type? The fact that a lot of Ravenscroft's quoted sources are out of print makes his ideas hard to check or corroborate.
Havng said all this, I really love the Spear of Destiny and I've lost track of the number of times I've given copies to friends. I love Ravenscroft's ideas, whereby WWII was really a conflict between famous 9th Century figures reincarnated after exactly 1000 years. Ravenscroft's WWII was a war between cosmic Good and Evil in their most absolute senses. It's all very Michael Moorcock/The Highlander and if anything, Ravenscroft's book highlights how sorely we need a bit of romance and myth in our times. Read it by all means. Maybe you'll take it seriously, maybe not. But you will certainly be entertained.

Never put it down!

In a talk I attended the speaker mentioned the "Spear" that pierced Christ at his death and the history and ledgend that accompnies it. This was my first exposure to such an interesting history. This book was very enlightening especially regarding the facination that Hitler had with the occult and the spear. The book has many German words and lots of characters that were at times difficult to assimilate. The overall information was so facinating that it was hard to put the book down. It not only covered the history of the spear but the mind set of those in the higher ranks of Germany in World War I and II and the possibily of how they have been coming back to fill a destiny from previous lives. This is not a book for those who have little knowledge of the occult as you have to realize that the implement can be for good as well as darkness.

Fine piece of historiography

Royle's book was an accessible work of historiography. He traced the path of the Scottish regiments fighting on three continents as well as the feats of individuals Scottish soldiers and leaders (most notably Field Marshal Haig). He chronicled some of the major issues on the home front, during and after the war, such as the radicalization of Scots laborers and the attempts of returning veterans to secure land in the aftermath of the war. The book was far from perfect; the chronology was occasionally awkward, some of the points of emphasis were idiosyncratic, and the author seemed torn between whether to make subjective judgments or simply to lay out competing points of view in pertinent historical debates. On the aggregate, however, it ranks as a very important contribution to the history of Scotland and as a fine work for students of WWI and European history on how the "macro" scale of world war impacted the "micro" scale of a small European country.

I have collect over the years many of Mr. Lamberts drawings and books and I have never been let down and you wont either. He is an expert at the beloved Flower Class Corvette's of WW2. Let him take you back and put you on the bridge. Of these small and tough little ships

Calico Captive is Elizabeth George Speare's first historical fiction children's novel. It was inspired by the true story of Susanna Willard Johnson (1730 – 1810) who, along with her family and younger sister, were kidnapped in an Abenakis Indian raid on Charlestown, New Hampshire in August 1754. Rachel is a goddess

I haven't made jam for over 20 years, back when it was very difficult to find interesting pectin-free recipes, but when I saw this book, I knew I had to have it. While I can get Blue Chair jam locally (like the author, I live in the San Francisco Bay Area), the price makes me hesitate to throw a jar into my grocery cart, even though I'm well aware of how much labor goes into that little jar, and as much as I *love* Rachel's fig jam with ginger.

I was initially put off by all the full-page photographs of the author looking fey in her jammy wonderland--Rachel with vintage accessories, Rachel wandering through a misty orchard, Rachel caressing airbrushed fruit--I would have preferred, say, a photograph detailing how to skin a green almond. It's a gorgeous book and I wondered if its target audience was the folks who like to lie in bed and look at the pictures in cookbooks, but actually eat takeout much of the time.

My first recipe (strawberry-Meyer lemon marmalade) was a qualified success. The recipe specified covering lemon slices in a "medium" saucepan with one inch of water, but I think I used too large a pan, and ended up with too much water to cook off. I also couldn't get the hang of Rachel's method of testing when the jam is done, which involves putting a specific number of spoons in the freezer, and checking the texture of the jam as it sets up on a cold spoon. I omitted the rose geranium cuttings (there's a limit to the produce I can come up, even in the Bay Area). It was a very good marmalade, but a little tight in texture, as I'd overcooked it a bit.

For my second recipe (strawberry-kiwi jam), I went back to my tried-and-true method of testing the jam on a saucer in the fridge. Rachel's description of when the jam is done was spot-on. The jam was so delicious, I found myself repeatedly going to the fridge to eat a spoonful.

I've made kiwi marmalade before, but it was nothing like this. And I've made fig jam, but it was nothing like Rachel's. Now I've got the recipes for success. And now that I'm convinced Rachel's a goddess, I'm no longer irritated by the cookbook's adulatory images. In fact, I might frame one and put it up on my kitchen wall.

Are her produce lists esoteric? Yes, indeed. And she doesn't hesitate to call for esoteric and expensive liquors, as well: does your local liquor store even carry St. Germain elderflower liqueur, and would you be wiling to fork over $30 for a bottle to perfect your White Nectarine Jam with Elderflower and Green Almonds? There are ingredients in the book I've never even heard of, despite living in an affluent, food-obsessed area (what IS "pine cone bud syrup," anyway?) You can certainly adapt her methods to whatever produce is available in your area, and your jams will be infinitely superior to the pectin-stiffened ones in the Cooperative Extension recipe pamphlets, but you might still find the preciousness of some of the book overall to be off-putting.

Great as coffee table food porn. Frustrating as a cookbook.

I'm giving this book three stars because I can't do what I'd really like to, which is to give it both five stars and one star at the same time. It is a beautiful, well-written yet disempowering, inspiring and infuriating collection of recipes and information.

Full-page photographs occupy nearly every other leaf of this massive volume; open it anywhere and you're almost certain to be assaulted by an intoxicating obscenity of color and texture that will tweak your salivary glands into involuntary action.

Less attractively, The Blue Chair never stops working very, very hard to sell you a particular fantasy lifestyle. In this respect it's evocative of early Martha Stewart, because the author herself is packaged in a panoply of pretty poses along with the fruit spreads. She appears over and over again -- picking fruit, holding fruit, cutting and stirring fruit. Always her clothing is impeccably matched to the fruit she is picking or the blossoms she is snipping. Always her hair is perfectly coiffed. Never is there a hint of effort or haste or dissarray. These images are so brazenly fantastic that I can't help feeling manipulated.

But perhaps I'm just in a sour mood? After all, isn't there a place for fantasy? Must I ascribe such dark motives? Might it all have been meant in good fun?

Maybe. But what most seriously damages this book for me is the sheer impracticality, often bordering on impossiblity, of so many of the recipes. The author runs her jam company in an affluent city, in one of the best areas of the country for fruit growers. It makes perfect sense for her to base her company there and to make the best of the amazing ingredients she has access to, but she does not seem aware of how fortunate she is to have such resources. Out of perfectionism or mere obliviousness, she's written a book the browsing of which is an exercise in frustration. If your local grocery or farmers' market doesn't offer bergamots, pluots, apriums, green almonds, olallieberries, boysenberries, elderberries, geranium blossoms, fresh currants, citrons, crabapples and quinces, then broad swaths of the recipes will be impossible to carry out. Others will come withing range only as compromised approximations, unless you can obtain preciously specific varieties of fruit like Rangpur limes, Flavorella plumcots, Santa Rosa plums, Montmorency cherries, Flavor King Pluots and Tempranillo grapes.

This is definitely not a bad book. The first forty-odd pages convey a nuanced understanding of the differences between various sorts of jams, jellies and marmalades. Jam-making techniques and processes are described in sensual terms that prepare the reader to understand and react to what they'll be seeing and hearing and smelling if they should actually decide to make some jam. Those early pages alone make the book worth a serious look. But my primary expectation of any cookbook is that it be empowering, that it help me prepare and enjoy foods that I couldn't have enjoyed without its help. In too many ways, this book provides the opposite experience. Browsing the recipes is like being teased on a playground, taunted with visions of fun that is largely out of reach.

Good news/Bad news

There is so much to like about this cookbook and so much to hate. To like? The inclusion of so many fruits and the never-too-sweet preparations. I made the aprium jam, the tomato jam and the Italian plum conserve and was pleased with each result. The bad news? Way too many obscure ingredients. I found a cache of Early Girl dry farmed tomatoes, but where the heck am I supposed to find a blade of mace? Sure, I can order it on line, but by the time it arrives, the tomatoes are well past their prime, so I used a whole nutmeg instead. And, had I not happened to find Early Girl dry farmed tomatoes, would it have been worth making the jam? I found some perfectly ripe Italian prune plums for the prune and cardamom preserve, but where to find white cardomam seeds? Won't the mixed ones I have do? At the least, the author should recognize that not everyone has these handy and offer an alternative. All the space spent on photos of the author gazing at fruit and walking through an orchard could have been used to print recipes of the wonderful dishes suggested, but not explained, in other photos. The book is poorly indexed. A book that could have been great, but is only good, and irritating to use.
