Sue Blackman has been an instructor in the 3D field for nearly 20 years at art schools and community colleges. She has been involved with the commercial development of real-time 3D engines for more than 10 years. In the past, she has been a contributing author for New Riders Press (Max4 Magic) and written for AMC Siggraph on serious games. She has written product training materials and instruction manuals for developing content with real-time 3D applications, used by multimedia departments in Fortune 1000 companies including Boeing, Raytheon, and Lockheed Martin, among others. In addition to writing and teaching, Sue has been the lead 3D artist on several games for Activision and its subsidiaries.

Definitely worth the wait (no spoilers here)

If you loved the first two books, you will love Shadows Past. We learn more about why Rabbit's parents fled to the country and about Captain Suiden's past in Tural. Also more about King Jusson's early life. There are nuggets of humor sprinkled throughout the book. The action is well written and there is plenty of it. There are new characters to wonder about. And as usual trouble always seems to find Rabbit through no fault of his own. I was happily shocked by the explanation of the events going on. I didn't see it coming but it made perfect sense. I could not put this book down. I only hope we don't have to wait as long as we did between The King's Own and Shadows Past for #4, The Reckoning Flames. Buy this book and be prepared to pull an all nighter. I sure did.

Finally, The Third Book!

I enjoyed the third story, "Shadows Past," in the series, which takes up directly after the events of Book 2. I didn't re-read the second book before starting the third, but Ms. Freeman did an excellent job of inserting refresher bits and pieces from the previous story to jog the readers' memory. If you are new to the series, you really have to start with the first Borderlands novel, "Covenants," then read the second book, "The King's Own," in order to fully appreciate the world Ms. Freeman has created and the vibrant characters living within it. In the third book, you learn more about the Borderlands world and many new, important characters are introduced. While not precisely a cliff-hanger ending, it is clear that there is a great deal more to be told as the story continues to unfold. My understanding from Ms. Freeman's website is that she is currently at work on Book 4 called "The Reckoning Flame" and that Rabbit is finally growing up from the naive boy he has been. I am sincerely hoping that Book 4 will not be delayed by the publisher like they did to "Shadow's Past."

Good but not great.

Not as good as the first book in the series and unfortunately, not as good as the second book either. A few typos and grammar problems, but that seems to be plaguing many writers these days. My biggest complaints are the shallowness of the new characters and the total changes in the personalities of some of the older characters. Yes, I realize that the events of the second book were quite traumatic, but I can't help thinking that the characters of the first and second books should have fared a little better. And perhaps one in particular improved a little too much.

There was an overall lack of depth to this book which made the writer's 'formula style' a little too obvious and at times the writing even feels forced. While Rabbit was still the main focus, we did not seem as privy to his emotions and thoughts as in the first books. And while much family history was revealed, there were just as many new questions left unanswered.

If you read the first two books and enjoyed them then by all means, read this one as well. But while the first book was absolutely phenomenal in both the style of writing and the originality and depth of the characters; this third book is merely an OK read.

Dr. Joel Drinkard is Associate Professor of Old Testament at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he received his Ph.D. in 1980. Consistently Excellent Despite Three Authors

This is a delightful commentary that covers the first 25 chapters of Jeremiah. Considering the unique background of its development, I am happy to be able to say that.

Peter C. Craigie was commissioned to write the WBC Jeremiah commentary. He had written the introduction and finished the commentary up to Chapter 8, verse 3 when he died in a car accident. The WBC editors then commissioned two other OT scholars to finish this volume: Page H. Kelly covered from Chapter 8, verse 4 to the end of Chapter 16, and Joel F. Drinkard finished the volume.

The resulting commentary is excellent and surprisingly consistent. I knew Craigie's part would be good because I had read his NICOT commentary on Deuteronomy and found that to be superb. After I finished Craigie's part, I continued to read where Kelley took over, and not having read anything by him, didn't know what to expect. However, I found it to be a smooth transition: Kelley was as good as Craigie! The same thing occurred when I moved into Chapter 17, where Drinkard took over; another smooth transition and continuing excellent commentary! The three authors and WBC editors did a superb job of producing a high-quality volume under complex conditions.

The preface states that the WBC's "layout, in clearly defined sections, has been consciously devised to assist readers at different levels." For each Biblical passage (usually from a couple to a dozen verses), there is a bibliography, the author's own translation, notes on the Hebrew text, a form/structure/setting section, a comment section, and an explanation. When properly done, this format works quite well, and Craigie, Kelley, and Drinkard all used the format exceptionally well.

The form/structure/setting section provides the technical organization of the passage, the comment section supplies the verse-by-verse exposition, and the explanation gives a summary or popular exposition of the passage. You can say that the form/structure/setting section is the leaves, the comment section is the trees, and the explanation is the forest--together they fully explain the passage.

I like the theological insights in a technical commentary such as the WBC and this volume on Jeremiah provided many. Following are three examples.

Craigie on child-sacrifice in ancient times: "And if we are horrified by the thought of child-sacrifice in the Valley of Hinnom, we need to ask whether it is so fundamentally different, in the taking of young life, from some of the casual forms of abortion that characterize many sectors of modern society." (p. 128).

Kelley on true greatness: "What is the measure of true greatness? The world today honors its scholars, especially those in the scientific field, its soldiers, its wealthy aristocrats, and its entertainers. Jeremiah regarded Israel's fascination with wisdom, power, and wealth as ludicrous and idolatrous. . . . The godly values--love, justice, and righteousness--put the values of wisdom, power, and riches into proper perspective." (p. 154).

Kelley on the sorrow of God: "This passage [Jer. 12:7-17] gives us a rare glimpse into the consternation and anguish that evil causes God. The anguish is especially acute for Him when His own people are responsible for it. . . . It is amazing to think that evil can cause God the same anguish that it causes man." (p. 185f.).

Although all WBC volumes are not equal in quality, I really like the WBC Series as a whole and the ones that I have read were excellent (Genesis by Wenham; Exodus by Durham; 1 Chronicles by Braun; 2 Chronicles by Dillard). Reading this commentary gave me a greater appreciation of Jeremiah and his ministry and a deeper love for God--time and money well spent.

His books include Frank Lloyd Wright: Designs for an American Landscape, 1922-1932 (1997), Louis I. Kahn: In the Realm of Architecture (1991), and Bruce Goff: Toward Absolute Architecture (1988). He has taught at the University of Sydney, Australia; the Middle East Technical University, Turkey; and Columbia University, New York, from which he received his Ph.D. in architectural history.

Jean-Louis Cohen is Professor at the Institut Fran�ais d'Urbanisme in Paris and at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, New York. His publications include Mies van der Rohe (1996); Scenes of the World to Come: European Architecture and the American Challenge 1893-1960 (1995); Andr� Lur�at (1894-1970); Autocritique d'un moderne (1995); and Le Corbusier and the Mystique of the USSR: Theories and Projects for Moscow, 1928-1936 (1992). He was recently appointed by the French Minister of Culture to create a museum of architecture in Paris.

J. Michael Desmond, and architect, is Associate Professor in the School of Architecture at Louisiana State University, from which he received his Bachelor of Architecture degree. He holds his Master's degree from Harvard University and Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has taught at Harvard and Tulane universities, the Rhode Island School of Design, the University of Massachusetts, and the Boston Architectural Center, and has practiced architecture in Louisiana, Massachusetts, and New York.

David A. Hanks is Director of Exhibitions International, New York City, and Consulting Curator for the Montreal Museum of Decorative Arts. He has held curatorial positions at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and from the Graham Foundation to carry out research for The Decorative Designs of Frank Lloyd Wright, Dutton, 1979.

Richard Joncas teaches and lectures on Frank Lloyd Wright as well as modern American and European architecture. His essay on Wright's Hanna house appeared in the September 1993 issue of the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians. Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer came to the Taliesin Fellowship as an apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright in 1949. With the exception of a year he spent in Paris studying at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts, he has remained with the Fellowship ever since. He is director of The Frank Lloyd Wright Archives, a member of the board of trustees of The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, and the author of nearly forty books on Wright's life and work, notably Frank Lloyd Wright: The Masterworks (1993). He lives in Taliesin West, Wright's winter home and studio and the international headquarters of the Wright Foundation, with his Doberman, Geronimo.

Jack Quinan is Professor in the School of Architecture at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he has taught since 1975. He also taught at the University of Rhode Island in 1972-75 and holds his Master's and Ph.D. from Brown University. The curator of Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin D. Martin house, he is currently completing a book on Wright's relationship with Martin, one of his leading clients. He is director of The Frank Lloyd Wright Archives, a member of the board of trustees of The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, and the author of nearly forty books on Wright's life and work, notably Frank Lloyd Wright: The Masterworks (1993). He lives in Taliesin West, Wright's winter home and studio and the international headquarters of the Wright Foundation, with his Doberman, Geronimo.

Jack Quinan is Professor in the School of Architecture at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he has taught since 1975. He also taught at the University of Rhode Island in 1972-75 and holds his Master's and Ph.D. from Brown University. The curator of Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin D. Martin house, he is currently completing a book on Wright's relationship with Martin, one of his leading clients. He is the author of Frank Lloyd Wright's Larkin Building: Myth and Fact (1987) and numerous articles on the architect.

One of the few Hammond methods around

I thought there were no Hammond methods, but somehow I found this one, and it's a good starting point for neophytes of the B-3 and drawbar organs. Don't expect it to disclose all the techniques you heard on Jimmy Smith's records, but it can be really useful as a reference book. The addition of the CD is absolutely essential: a good feature from the author.
It's a fairly good catalogue of riffs, although I wish it focused a lot more on funk and jazzy riffs (there are some good examples, however -but not enough nor representative) than on poppy ballads and clich�s.
Anyway,at least it can lend some help to us forgotten organists and lovers of the Hammond!

Good overview of Hammond Organs - just what I was after

I played the organ as a kid and took 5 years of lessons, but I was playing a lower end Lowrey spinet. Even though I'm a guitar player now, I still like the organ sounds and I play in a tribute band that has a lot material the uses Hammond B3 sounds. I wanted to learn more about the various Hammond models, how they work, what you can do with them, and have some sound samples to compare to my own experimenting with other keyboards. I was even considering buying an old Hammond off craigslist (or wherever) to play with at home, or maybe a new modern portable Hammond or other keyboard. This book is helping me understand some of the basic differences.

It has a few pages showing different models, and describing basic differences. There are good diagrams of controls and a lot of recommended settings. But most of the book is exercises with the settings called out and descriptions of what to pay attention to when playing. I don't know if I'll actually every use/play them but in combination with the audio CD I can at least hear what the different controls are doing and how the techniques work. It covers a lot of the technique stuff that gives the organ it's "sizzle" in modern rock, blues and jazz pieces.

Well put together, better than a lot of music books I've seen.

Unlike the rest

There are a few good Hammond books out there but this one is the most complete. Drawbar settings, percussion and chorus/vibrato settings, swell pedal and leslie instruction, very thorough. Not only does it take you through a gradual learning process to get the instrument down, you gain some cool licks and stylistic direction along the way.

About the Author
Conrad Phillip Kottak (A.B. Columbia, 1963; Ph.D. Columbia, 1966) is Professor and Chair of Anthropology at the University of Michigan, where he has taught since 1968. In 1991 he was honored for his teaching by the University and the state of Michigan. In 1992 he received an excellence in teaching award from the College of Literature, Sciences, and the Arts of the University of Michigan. In 1999 the America Anthropological Association awarded Professor Kottak the AAA/Mayfield Award for Excellence in the Undergraduate Teaching of Anthropology.

Professor Kottak has done fieldwork in cultural anthropology in Brazil (since 1962), Madagascar (since 1966), and the United States. Conrad Kottak's articles have appeared in academic journals including American Anthropologist, Journal of Anthropological Research, American Ethnologist, Ethnology, Human Organization, and Luso-Brazilian Review. He has also written for more popular journals, including Transaction/SOCIETY, Natural History, Psychology Today, and General Anthropology.

In current research projects, Kottak and his colleagues have investigated the emergence of ecological awareness in Brazil, the social context of deforestation in Madagascar, and popular participation in economic development planning in northeastern Brazil.

Recently, Kottak was inducted to The National Academy of Sciences. This is a private organization of scientists and engineers dedicated to the furtherance of science and its use for the general welfare. .
