Kathleen Reeder Captures All The Moments!

Capturing wildlife photographs is unlike other photography. Sports photography probably comes the closest. Wild animals are very unpredictable, assuming you can even approach close enough to take their pictures. Wild animals are usually moving, sometimes very fast. With moving wild animals, backgrounds are constantly changing. Lighting angles can change dramatically in seconds. Wild animals may disappear in fleeting seconds before looking at you or striking an interesting pose.

Kathleen Reeder covers these challenges in her new book. She rightly describes good wildlife photography as a combination of art and science. Her book contains a variety of tips about actually capturing the pictures effectively, what equipment to employ, useful camera features, such as focus tracking. The book is well written, easy to understand, and fully illustrated with Kathleen's photographs.

A theme throughout the book is her passion for the wildlife, a genuine caring feeling that is reflected in her pictures.

I strongly recommend Capturing the Moment for anyone wanting to put some "WOW" into his/her wildlife photographs.

I'm an avid wildlife photographer, I literally do it every weekend and I know that I don't know it all so I invest in a lot of education and this book has answered questions I had not yet thought to ask myself. It's reassuring to know I'm on the right track but its even more valuable to have this book on hand when I'm out in the mountains or desert looking for critters, birds and landscape. This book is like a guide to taking great photos of wildlife, and landscape for that matter. Its clear cut and straight to the point, so if you are looking to remember something specific, finding it in this book is fast and easy.

Inspirational and an easy read!

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I received this book in the mail. But I was intrigued by the description on the back cover. So I decided to order it through Amazon Vine. I'm really glad I did. This little book is a very fast read.

The author has fallen into a deep depression and begins to question his life. He is no longer sure if he even wants to go on living. Planning a suicide in his mind triggers a time of intense soul-searching and introspection. He looks back over the course of his life and zeros on on the things that really matter. The stories in this book are intimate. Most of them are about close friends, family and other personal experiences. The author finally realizes that it's the people in our lives who truly matter most. Some of them may only be in our lives for a short time, but can leave a long-lasting impact on the heart and life. The author also comes to believe that it's not status, money, or possessions that lead to lasting happiness. It is possible to have all these things and still be miserable. This book is chocked full of practical wisdom and is peppered with quotes from famous people through out. I could definitely relate to a lot of what the author shared and struggled with. The struggles the author discusses in this book are universal to all people. This is a very thought-provoking book and it will show you how to be grateful for the little things in life. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is going through a difficult time or has given up hope. Life is too short to waste what little time we have on things that ultimately won't matter. Ultimately, this is a book of hope.

Not the last day but a fresh start

I was very interested in reading this book. I have never heard of the author but the subject matter piqued my interest. I think many people have found themselves at one point and time thinking their life would be better if they just ended it. I think we all suffer from depression at one point in time such as the author has. But what one chooses to do with life when faced with those thoughts is up to each of us. Jim Moret was brave enough to write about his experiences and how he dealt with them. I think you have to be connected with such issues and I found it very inspiring rather than depressing.

I was very drawn to this book and could not put it down. From reading it you would think the author has everything one could want in his life -- a great job, life, family, home, you name it. From the outside looking in, people probably did not think there were any problems. However that changed. He lets you know that from the inside looking out his life was not going the way he wanted it to. He had plans to end his life. It was not just a thought he had once but battled with for some time. Instead of asking himself what if he had never lived he asked himself what if he had one day left to life? With that he took an appreciation for life and everything around it.

While the author shares his life with you in a way you can actually visualize it, I felt the same thoughts and emotions at times he had running through his mind. Rather than ending his life and deciding to actually live it he still faced and dealt with a lot of problems. But in the end he found different ways to deal with the life he was given. If you ever felt life was not worth living, please pick this up. Truly a very brave man!

Best fossil horse book out there

I'm a novice trying to understand the incredibly complex history, 58 million years, of the horse. I went on a dig and had the fun of finding bones and teeth from Miocene thru Pleistocene horses. I had a lot of questions after I got home about various issues raised by what we found. This book answered them and more. It's a real scientist's book, not a coffee table book, so it takes some concentrated reading, but I learned things that allowed me to go the natural history museum and perceive the fine points in the display. There were interesting asides also about the perspectives of scientists from the last few centuries, and earlier graphics to compare to new ones illustrating how the understanding of evolution has changed over the years. I'm going on another dig and this time I may know what I'm looking at.

Primarily for the specialist

I got this book brand new for 50 pence as apparently the book had no buyers.
For 10,000 years human civilization depended on horses and unsurprisingly horse evolution was a hot scientific topic at a time when people had no faster means of personal transport. History and its emperors are littered with tales of the horse and the equine symbollism in war and heroism is still with us. Given such a magical subject McFadden's book represents a somewhat staid academic account in the style of a scientific paper. Peppered with many references McFadden treats the reader like an academic used to such presentation and fails to enliven his topic. He touches all too briefly on the cultural importance of the horse and the book lacks any decent illustrations save several charts and technical drawings.
McFadden has certainly put in a great deal of hard work and covers many topics from the history of the study of horse evolution to geneology, geological time and the work he and his co-workers have produced. The book is too specific on the Equidae and does not deal adequately with recently extinct members of this family like the quagga and prehistoric species. Nor does it explain clearly why horses may have dissapeared from the Americas. Parts of the book, e.g., the limb locking mechanism were for me hard to follow. The book is afraid of speculation.
It provides ample materials and references to the student and to the paleontologist and is a good textbook. It fails to dramatise its subject and to attract a "lay audience". We are not really treated to what makes horses so special but to its credit it represents a highly authoritative and up to (its) date digest.

Horses and Evolution

The horse is often cited as one of the shining examples of evolution. It is even more often cited by CreationISTs and Intelligent Design proponents as an example of the folly of "evolutionists". CreationISTs consistently misquote, misreprensent and fabricate their arguments about horse evolution.

MacFadden's book is not strictly about the evolution of horses. Individual specimens are not cited, measurements are not provided, and character matrices are absent. Strictly speaking, it is a book about evolution, which just happens to use the author's extensive knowledge of fossil horses as its exemplars.

MacFadden discusses the nature of paleontology and the nature of fossils. He talks about how we erect a chronological structure for our fossils. He explicates various evolutionary processes, including variation, speciation and extinction. Functional morphology, population dynamics, ecology - all are described in terms which the non-specialist can appreciate, and are illustrated using the fossil record of horses.

For those who struggle daily against the incursion of religion into the science classroom, I cannot imagine a better preparation than a careful reading of this book. For anyone interested in learning just what a paleontologist does it provides a wide-based introduction. High school students will find it fascinating; it could be used as an excellent text for a college level course in evolutionary biology, and vertebrate paleontologists will find it a welcome state-of-the-art summary of what we know about the evolution of the horse.

The cutting-edge science of why so many folks these days are in a distracted haze, its dangers, and what to do about it

Have you noticed how many people are looking at their smartphones while walking, crossing the street or even driving? Does it drive you up the wall that your friends keep checking their phones while you're trying to talk to them or share a meal? Our addiction to gadgets and gizmos has brought us to the brink of an attention crisis, which is not just harmful but dangerous. 80% of all car accidents and 16% of highway deaths result from distracted driving, and every year texting while driving kills thousands of folks before their time. In addition, hundreds of billions of dollars in productivity are lost annually to distraction, not to mention the loss in overall quality of life. Why do we all do this even though we know it's terrible for us? And is there a cure?

Goal interruption is the ultimate problem, and the culprits are distractions and interruptions (there's a difference!). According to Drs Gazzaley and Rosen, we are susceptible to them because we still have brains designed for foraging, always scoping the environment for novel information to enhance survival. Unfortunately, modern gizmos plug directly into this foraging circuit, making us go "Squirrel!" even when it's just a picture of one on a screen, and we don't really eat squirrels anymore anyway.

Gazzaley and Rosen -- a neuroscientist and psychologist, respectively -- make a strong case that distraction is indeed diminishing the quality of our lives in significant ways. They lay out the science of attention and information processing in a way that is thorough yet accessible to a general audience. What I particularly like about this book is that they themselves have done some of the pioneering research on distraction and attention, so you're getting it straight from the source. I gained a lot of insight into how goal interruption happens. For example:
-- Suppressing irrelevant information is not a passive process. It requires effort, and as you get older, you get worse at it, and are more distractable.
-- Your brain can only handle one cognitive task at a time, so multitasking is impossible. What you're really doing when you think you're multitasking is 'task switching', and the brain can only do that via network switching: activating a whole different set of circuits. This slows you down, big time.

So we've identified the problem -- now what? The last two chapters of the book propose some solutions: educational initiatives, meditation, exercise, brain games, and video games, some of which (like Beepseeker and NeuroRacer) are being developed in the Gazzaley Lab right now. This is cutting-edge stuff, folks, and potentially revolutionary.

There's so much more in the book that simply won't fit in a short review. For me, the information was especially important because I've been feeling a lot of my energy and productivity frittering away from distractions like email and social media. How much more could I get done if I managed my mind better? "The Distracted Mind" non-judgmentally frames the problem as the urgent crisis that it is, while proffering some straightforward solutions. Maybe you, too, would like to take back some of your time and attention, or have a loved one that really needs help in this department. If so, this book is the persuasive wallop you need to make the change towards a more goal-oriented, productive, healthy life.

Take back control of your attention and improve your life

This book is an excellent resource for anyone curious about the impact on technology on our brains and how it affects our daily lives. Gazzaley and Rosen provide the background research––both the neuroscience and psychology––behind what is driving our obsession with technology, the positive and (mostly) negative impacts it has on our ability to focus and perform our best work, and how to take back control of our attention for optimal achievement. Most of us don't realize when we are blindly reacting to our environment rather than making conscious choices about where to focus our attention. The Distracted Mind will help you recognize these moments and choose for yourself how to best spend your time.

Heavy on research, scant on strategies/applications

The book goes very in depth on the research into how the mind works in terms of attention, distraction, motivation, choices, etc; and how it is affected when technology is thrown into the mix. However, I was really expecting and hoping for more strategies for maintaining one's ability to focus in this highly connected, multitasking society. This third part of the book was meager and contained nothing that I was not already aware of. I had expected that these two authors would use their expertise to postulate novel applications based on their excellent summation of the important research on this subject, or offer opinions or theories to help people maintain their focus. They did not do that at all. Pretty disappointing on that end.
