A window into an otherwise unknown world of human language

This book displays an unmatched breadth of research, and it does with complete clarity. I've owned it for almost 10 years, and though Australian languages are not my field of expertise, I have learned a great deal about what humans can do with language from this book. There are so many things we might assume to be true of (or at least likely in) all of the world's languages. Dixon's masterful overview of the many Indigenous languages of Australia puts such assumptions in their proper place. Human languages are amazingly diverse, and the languages of Australia are built up on grammars and lexicons which are often utterly unlike anything encountered in languages elsewhere in the world. For example, many Aboriginal languages lack rich color words or more than a few number words, but they might contact kinship vocabulary so complex that not is there a different category for every relation (e.g. mother's younger sister vs. mother's older sister or father's older and younger sisters) but there might be multiple unique words for each of these categories on the basis of who is speaking to whom (e.g. one word for mother's younger sister if speaking to your mother, a different word for mother's younger sister if speaking to your father, and yet another word if speaking to another relative, etc.). Many Australian languages also have a secret language reserved for male initiates, and these secret languages run the gamut from very restricted versions of the regular language with only a few replacement vocabulary items to full-blown second languages with hundreds of unique vocabulary items, some of which come form other languages and some of which might preserve archaic pronunciations of native vocabulary.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the ancient and modern history of the continent of Australia and the unusual ways in which humans beings spoke with one another after 50,000 years of isolation from all other human populations.

Comprehensive Treatise on Australian Languages

This 734-page treatise on "Australian Languages - their nature and development" by Dr. Robert M.W. Dixon reflects his four decades of linguistic research. It was published in 2002 by Cambridge University Press, and a second printing in 2007 is in paperback format, plus e-book format.

For 29 years, Professor Dixon taught at Australian National University (1970-1999). He then moved in 2000 to LaTrobe University where he served as Director of the Research Center of Linguistic Typology. Dr. Dixon has now retired and moved to Queensland where he is an Adjunct Professor at James Cook University, The Cairns Institute.

RIDICULOUS PRICE GOUGING

I actually cannot rate this with stars since Amazon is not responsible for the situation with this book. It is an EXCELLENT book, my institution has tried to purchase this a few months ago without success (order was confirmed, never heard anything, then seller canceled the order likely for the next point in my discussion). I think this book must somehow be required at some hospitals by their different states' regulatory bodies if compounding ophthalmic preparations. Based on this requirement, and the shortage of this "out of print" first edition book from ASHP, the laws of supply and demand have driving this otherwise $65 book to $300, then $500, then $2000, then $5000, then to even $10,000 as I saw it in October. This is a total sham, and leaves me wondering why ASHP never made this available as an e-book????? I am still waiting for this to drop below $200 before directing my institution to purchase it. I am sure many of my fellow medical professionals find this price gouging ridiculous.

There are lots of grammar and spelling mistakes in this book. Maybe the asian authors would have needed an editor with english as first langugage. Also, what I missed very much are insights about the metabolic and hormonal consequences of those operations.

Finding our own inner strength, wisdom, and compassion in finding a mate with guidance from above

What is the right partner and what do they mean in my life? Such a simple question, but faith can be overlooked in finding the right person. Most books about finding the right partner often limit themselves only to nondenominational advice. By virtue of this, they fail to incorporate elements of spirituality and spiritual guidance which can have a critical impact on finding and keeping a relationship. This book takes you along a path looking into how faith can direct our search and how that guidance translates into a deeper relationship.

This book should not be limited to just the people of faith, as its contents touch on so much more than that. Compassion. Inner strength. Wisdom. All things that anyone could use more of in finding a significant other. With the pressures of modernity and commercialism at every side dictating choices, looking back into ourselves to find our inner strengths and vulnerabilities, our character, and even our faith in finding a mate is a compelling reason to read this book. This insightful book may just strike a chord in you, as it did me.

It turned out to be very insightful and opened my eyes to a lot.
It also helped me to see that there is nothing wrong with respectfully walking away from a relationship when there is no compatibility.
God's way of intentional dating and relationships is the way to go!

About the Author
Sidney Lanier (1842-1881) was born in Macon, Georgia. After serving in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, he held a variety of jobs and traveled widely throughout the northern and southern states. In addition to earning success as a poet, Lanier received praise as a professional flutist with the Peabody Symphony Orchestra in Baltimore before he died of tuberculosis in 1881.

A true timeless classic!

My father first began reading to me from this book when I was just a wee lad. The stories of honor, courage and chivalry, as well as the "forsooth" writing style en-thralled me in the magical mystery surrounding Arthur and his knights. I believe that the stories read to me as a child went on to shape me into the person I am today. I encourage all parents to by this book as bedtime reading for their children. Turn down the lights, and let the past come alive! A wonderfully romantic tale for the young at heart as well!

It's a pleasure to see the work of the patriach of an American painters family, N. C. Wyeth. This juvenile version of the Arthur myth is a good and classic introduction into Celtic lore later transformed into chivalry, knights, castles, and mystery. The art makes it worth reading and enjoying by an older audience. Bill Rowe

The title says it all

I understand psychology way more now. You will be able to impress your friends by telling them they are sick with things like various behavioral disorders, depression, and borderline personality disorder. They will appreciate your candor. If they don't, they're probably really sick and you may want to prescribe medication for them. Seriously, your friends should learn to take constructive criticism. You're the one with the psychology book, not them.

Rented this book last semester after seeing it was MUCH cheaper than my schools bookstore. It came on time and in perfect condition and I was able to send it back without problems. Because of this experience using the amazon rental system, I rented another book for another course and hope to have the same experience with the book!

This textbook has everything you need to know about psychology. A perfect introductory book into the subject of psychology with a writing style that is easy to understand; it also has a review section for each chapter to help you remember the main points, which helps when you have to study for exams. It makes psychology a lot more simple, making it easier for you too fully understand some of the complicated areas of psychology. It is also a good psychology reference book. I used this for my psychology class, I liked it so much I kept it instead of trading it in at the end of the semester. By the time you read this review there will probably up to a later edition, but I'm sure they will also be just as good as this edition; good series.

For the few.

It is important to realize this book is not for everyone, it does contain certain things that may empower your imagination and views on life but for most people it is quite harmless, to get to this book I recommend you have studied the ways of the Left Hand Path on your own before (there are other two books from the same author that may be most suited for beginners) or you risk yourself to misunderstanding what is being told to you in this book.

There is much information about the Temple of Set in the internet, some of it may be hidden for those who are just momentary curious but for those who are indeed interested there are hundreds and hundreds of pages of information regarding the Temple and it's practices, this book however contains the very basics (or core) of Setian philosphy (plus one).

There is another reviewer who says something about Michael Aquino (founder of the Temple) and his "fascination with Nazi leaders?" of this you shall know then that the Temple and this book is not for those who judge before knowing, if you want to know more about it I recommend the Masters of the Left Hand Path book by Dr. Stephen Flowers.

Not for the light of intellect, this book is packed with information. Don't let the lack of pages deceive you, every page is full of information, not fluff. Even one who can devour volumes in a day will have to take this book in smaller bites, and digest the meaning of the words over time in order to get the fullness of its meaning. Uncle Setnakt is a great writer with humor and wisdom in equal amounts. For those who seek a little bit lighter fare but still of the same grain, I recommend Uncle Setnakt's Essential Guide to the Left Hand Path. It is a little easier to understand and a faster read, but just as informative.

what is the Temple of Set?

I have been interested in the Temple of Set, but it's hard to get much on it. This book gives some of it basic ideas, by one of its major leaders. The Temple seems to work in degrees and initiations, and it does not see, easy to find them. This book gives some basics.

About the Author
Jean Hunnisett has a lifetime's experience of professional costume making, including work for the Old Vic, Sadlers Wells, Royal Opera and Ballet, Royal Opera House-Covent Garden, the English National Opera, Washington Ballet, Houston Opera, Zurich Ballet, Australian Ballet and as Principle Cutter for Glyndebourne Festival Opera. She has worked for BBC Television on over fifty shows: 'The Six Wives of Henry VIII', 'Elizabeth R', 'Emma', 'Pride and Prejudice', 'Ivanhoe', 'Vanity Fare', 'Dr. Who', nine productions of the BBC Shakespeare Series, nine of the BBC Operas, etc. Jean also worked for commercial television companies, on shows such as: 'Edward the VII', 'Ghosts', 'Pygmalion' for Annette Crosby, and Twiggy among others. Her film credits include: 'The Slipper and the Rose', 'Joseph Andrews', 'The Corn is Green', 'For Your Eyes Only' and many more. For productions in London's West End theatre, she has made costume for such artists as Joan Collins, Dame Wendy Hiller, Joan Plowright and Dorothy Tutin. It would take pages to list the theatre, ballet and opera productions she has worked on. Another side of her work was to make parts of costumes for museums such as the Museum of London and Kensington Palace, enabling them to show incomplete treasures. Jean also made costumes for Madam Tussaud's at Warwick Castle and at Windsor Station. She inaugurated and taught period costume cutting at the London College of Fashion and extensively lectured at home and abroad. Her career has put her side by side with a host of famous personalities. Producers, directors, designers, stars of stage and screen, teachers and student all agree that Jean Hunnisett is the Preeminent Lady of Costume Construction.

Not as solid as its predecessor...

This volume of Period Costume for Stage and Screen covers the Victorian and Edwardian eras, and the book is much less useful than the one that came out before it. While there are still a variety of patterns there is not nearly as much guidance on how to put them together, correct fabrics and looks, and similar detail. I have, however, used it in conjunction with my copy of Patterns of Fashion to iron out some of the more difficult concepts in that second book. Over all I still recommend it for a completionist's library, but would not recommend it to the beginning sewer at all.

Excellent source of garment construction of the 19th century

Although I am not using this book for stage nor screen, but for a series of dolls clothed in 19th century fashion, it is an invaluable source of information on dress style, design and basic pattern construction for the garments I am making. A good basic understanding of garment construction and dress making would be helpful - this book is not for the beginner dress maker. The book is well laid-out, clear and precise. I own numerous books on fashion of the period, including antique fashion books and this one pulls it all together. Excellent!

Another great Hunnisett

Jean Hunnisett's books are my favorite! She has so much knowledge to share that you just can't find anywhere else, I wrote an extensive review on her other book, 1600-1800, which I used extensively. I have yet to actually use this book, but have read through it and I have a few projects planned. Highly recommended!
