Backstabbing for Beginners: My Crash Course in International Diplomacy, by Michael Soussan

The year is 1997, Michael Soussan, a fresh-faced young graduate takes up a new job at the U.N.’s Oil-for-Food Program, the largest humanitarian operation in the organization’s history. His mission is to help Iraqi civilians survive the devastating impact of economic sanctions that were imposed following the 1990 invasion of Kuwait.

As a gaffe-prone novice in a world of sensitive taboos, Soussan struggles to negotiate the increasing paranoia of his incomprehensible boss and the inner workings of one of the world’s notoriously complex bureaucracies. But as he learns more about the vast sums of money flowing through the program, it becomes clear that all is not what it seems. Soussan becomes aware that Saddam Hussein is extracting illegal kickbacks, a discovery that sets him on a collision course with the organization‘s leadership. On March 8, 2004, in a Wall Street Journal op-ed editorial, Soussan becomes the first insider to call for “an independent investigation” of the U.N.’s dealings with Saddam Hussein. One week later, a humiliated Kofi Annan appointed Paul Volcker to lead a team of sixty international investigators, whose findings resulted in hundreds of prosecutions in multiple countries, many of which are still ongoing.

Backstabbing for Beginners is at once a witty tale of one man’s political coming of age, and a stinging indictment of the hypocrisy that prevailed at the heart of one of the world’s most idealistic institutions.

From Publishers Weekly
Soussan, a former program associate for the United Nations, provides an insider's perspective on the U.N.'s oil-for-food scandal in this absorbing memoir. The author was a 24-year-old idealist when he went to work for the U.N.'s recently launched program to provide aid to Iraqi civilians suffering under the economic sanctions imposed after the Gulf War. He found a culture of incompetence where there is no truth but consensus and initiative is highly risky. Amid the turf wars and bureaucratic timidity at the U.N., Saddam Hussein was able to subvert the oil-for-food program with a regimen of bribes and kickbacks. Unable to persuade his superiors to expose the fraud, Soussan resigned in frustration after three years. When the massive fraud surfaced after Saddam's fall, the author published an op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal, which launched an independent investigation that uncovered billions of dollars in bribes and implicated global corporations, sovereign governments and U.N. officials—including Secretary-General Kofi Annan's son. Soussan brings provocative wit, a keen eye for detail and a knack for revealing anecdotes to this important account of the rampant greed, hypocrisy and cynicism festering behind the United Nations' humanitarian credo. [an] excellent source of information about corruption among leading participatory nations and the UN itself [and] an important revelatory work." -The Morning Star"

Intelligent and Witty - Something for Everyone
By Amazon Customer
Michael Soussan's memoir of his time as UN Oil for Food Programme Coordinator is all at once informative, provocative, witty, intelligent, and poignant. Far from your ordinary historical review, Mr. Soussan paints a detailed and engaging insider's picture of what was going on within the iconic international organization, complete with a description of the specific contents of Benon Sevan's office and a cast of nicknamed characters (including "Spooky," "Smiley Face," and his own - "The Kid"). In addition, Mr. Soussan demonstrates a strong grasp of the conflicting international interests and current affairs at the time.

Insofar as this book also serves as a "coming-of-age" piece, again, the author manages to accomplish much more, describing a young man, nave and hopeful, who was convinced he was going to make a difference - and he does, just not at all in the way he ever imagined. Mr. Soussan's writing is clever and will have you laughing out loud as you relate to some of the many mistakes he made in his younger days and gape at others you never would imagine happening to yourself (like nearly kissing your life goodbye as you pee in a mine-laden wasteland). At the same time, the book includes some very sobering scenes, and you will be engrossed in the tragedy Mr. Soussan aptly describes. The overall message of the book is powerful, reminding us to never forget our ability to achieve a greater good no matter what the odds.

Hits The Nail On The Head
By USNAVYVET2002
I am surprised this book has not been given more attention and that there aren't more customer reviews on it. Then it dawned on me: the book is critical of the UN; no wonder it hasn't received more media attention. That being said, it is a very, very good read. I have seen first hand the damage that a large government bureaucracy can dish out. Mr. Soussan's account of turf wars, bickering, egos and backstabbing is spot on. One point made in the book that probably miffed the nattering nabobs of negativism is the fact that he doesn't blame everything on President Bush. The author, being Danish with French ethnicity, rightly points out that the Iraq WMD issue preceeds Bush's term and that "regime change" was in fact the official US policy under President Clinton. He certainly doesn't praise Bush, but he gives insight into why Bush had to bypass the UN after the organization initially backed him.
Saddam Hussein is depicted, rightfully, as a lying madman who was bribing France, Russia and other nations to get sanctions lifted. The author goes into detail about the propaganda war waged by Hussein to create worldwide sympathy, hoodwink passive nations, and scam billions of dollars to build palaces and God knows what else.
For an in-depth description of why the UN fails to execute its resolutions and one of the reasons why the second Gulf War came to be such a mess, this book is a must read.

Fantastic Book!
By Hazel Eyes
This book is really wonderful! It's a must read for students, journalists, government employees, diplomats and anyone interested in international affairs. Funny and heart wrenching at the same time --- it's a coming of age story of a young man who thinks he has found his calling in a UN job until he realizes the sobering truth behind the UN's Oil-for-Food program in Iraq. Educational and relevant --- the author writes in a manner that will have you staying up late to finish the book. And while most of today's commentary about the UN comes from a particular political vantage point, Mr. Soussan is clearly not out to simply bash the UN or to defend it. He is neither from the political right or the political left and this makes his behind the scenes account particularly stinging. Buy a copy now!

From the Back Cover
Sergei Eisenstein's "October" (1927) is a testament to his technical genius, as well as being one of the most remarkable works of propaganda cinema. With sequences such as the storming of the Winter Palace, Eisenstein recreated the 1917 October Revolution as a heroic spectacle, thus furnishing the fledgling Soviet Union with its founding myth. In this analysis of "October," Richard Taylor asks to what extent the film can lay claim to "authentic" history. He then examines "October"'s relationship to the politics of the period and its contribution to the reinforcement of the Lenin cult and the emergent Stalin cult. Taylor explains both the theory and its application before situating "October" in the wider context of Eisenstein's career.

About the Author
Richard Taylor is Professor of Politics at the University of Wales Swansea and general editor of the five-volumeBFI edition of Eisenstein Writings, including The Eisenstein Reader (1998).

Helps To Illuminate the Obscure
By Dash Manchette
How clueless was I about the movie October? This clueless: I did not even know it was a silent movie until I actually started watching it. But I had heard of filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein before and knew that October was about the Soviet Revolution. Based on that alone, I picked up this book before watching the movie.

Different than what I expected, true, but the movie was still worthwhile. And this book by Richard Taylor made the experience quite a bit better. Both the silent format of the film as well as multiple references in the movie that are obscure to modern American audiences (not the target audience of October, to be certain) made the initial viewing rather difficult. I may know something of the October Revolution, but not that much, and Eisenstein’s film to commemorate the tenth anniversary contains quite a lot of images and references that Russian viewers of the day could reasonably be assumed to know. This book provided significant guidance that allowed me better sort out what I was seeing.

For example, Eisenstein made heavy use of intellectual montage, in which a series of images were used to convey a single idea. This explained numerous such sequences in the movie, such as the use of religious imagery to convey the idea that religion was in cahoots with the oppressive government and out of touch with the masses.

The book also provided some explanation of less significant figures relevant to the revolution that also provided for a deeper understanding. It is this contextualization that makes this BFI worthwhile. In all, not a bad contribution to the BFI library.

Probation and Parole: Theory and Practice (12th Edition), by Howard Abadinsky

Written from an insider’s view, this text provides an up-to-date and comprehensive examination of a field that is undergoing significant change.

Probation and Parole: Theory and Practice, 12e looks at the history of the field, how it moved from a focus on treatment/rehabilitation and the indeterminate sentence, toward a model based on control/law enforcement and the determinate sentence. It offers a logical, student-friendly approach. Written by a former community corrections professional, the author provides an insider’s view on how these changes affected the roles and responsibilities of probation and parole officers. In contrast to competing texts, the author weaves his experience with the practices of probation and parole agencies throughout the United States to provide a realistic, state-of-the-art view of the field. The use of cognitive behavior therapy and motivation interviewing, “broken windows”/community-based supervision, and the importance of evidence-based practice are examined.

Teaching and Learning Experience

This book will help students gain an insider’s view of the rapidly changing field of community corrections/probation and parole. It provides:

  • Relevant psychological and sociological theory: Applies social science theory to the practicalities of community corrections

Item as described. Clean and great price! If amazon is responsible for packaging, this is directed towards them: I wasn't pleased with the packaging at all. I feel as though the items were assailable to environmental elements, or could have easily slipped out of the untapped packaging, or easily stolen.

Aphrodite the Beauty

1 Boy Trouble
APHRODITE SLID INTO HER SEAT IN MR. Cyclops’s Hero-ology class just as the lyrebell sounded, signaling the start of another day at Mount Olympus Academy. As she tucked her long golden hair, which was threaded with pink ribbons, behind her delicate ears, she was aware that every godboy in class was watching her. She hoped that in her rush to get ready that morning she hadn’t smeared lipstick on her teeth. Lifting her chin, she smiled at one of the godboys. Because he was a centaur, and therefore part horse, he stood at the back of the room. With four legs, it was too difficult to sit in a chair. Dazzled by Aphrodite’s attention and sparkling blue eyes, he blushed and glanced away.

A few of the bolder godboys continued to gaze at her, however. Their adoration was plain to see. Ignoring them, Aphrodite reached into her bag and took out her Hero-ology textscroll. As the goddessgirl of love and beauty, she’d grown used to such admiration. Took it for granted in fact. All her life, godboys had found her enchantingly beautiful. It seemed they had only to look at her to fall hopelessly in love. That wasn’t her fault, of course. It was just the way things were.

Aphrodite glanced across the aisle at Athena, trying to get her attention. All week, the class discussions had centered around mortal maidens and youths. She wanted to ask if Athena had heard the intriguing rumors about a maiden on Earth who could run as swift as the wind, faster than any youth—or even beast. But as usual, her friend’s nose was buried in a text-scroll. Before Aphrodite could call out to her, Medusa, who sat directly behind Athena, leaned across the aisle.

Her head writhed with hissing green snakes instead of hair. Their tongues flicked in and out as she poked Aphrodite with one of her long green fingernails. “You were almost late,” she sneered. “Troubles, Bubbles?” Medusa and her horrible sisters, Stheno and Euryale, never missed an opportunity to use the awful nickname to make fun of Aphrodite’s sea foam origins.

“Not really,” Aphrodite muttered. She wasn’t about to admit she’d overslept. It would only give Medusa another reason to poke fun at her. Probably with jokes about her needing lots of beauty sleep. Fortunately, before her snaky green nemesis could say anything more, Mr. Cyclops finished with a student he’d been speaking to and stood up. As his humongous single eye swept the room, everyone fell silent.

Aphrodite wondered what they’d be discussing today. Yesterday their teacher had asked how much and what kind of help they thought gods should give to mortals they favored. Aphrodite, who enjoyed helping mortals in love, had hoped to talk about that, but the godboys in class had immediately steered the discussion toward weapons and war—topics that could never hold her interest for long.

Reaching into her bag again, she pulled out her pink papyrus notepad and began to doodle little hearts all over the front with her favorite red feather pen. Mr. Cyclops cleared his throat. “Today I’d like you to consider the following question,” he said. “Need mortal maidens always marry?”

Dropping her red feather pen in surprise, Aphrodite sat up straighter. Now this was an engaging question! She’d like to see the godboys try to make this into a discussion about weapons and war, she thought as she raised her hand high.

“Yes, Aphrodite?” asked Mr. Cyclops.

“I wouldn’t want to see any young maiden go unwed,” she said. “Everyone should have a chance to fall in love.”

“But what if the maiden would rather be alone?” Athena asked. “What if she has other interests, like traveling the world, or becoming a first-class scholar, or... or inventing things?”

Aphrodite smiled at her. Poor Athena. She’d never really had a boyfriend. Just wait until she experienced her first crush. She’d think differently then. “If the maiden feels that way, then perhaps it’s only because she hasn’t yet found the right youth,” Aphrodite said kindly.

“But not all youths marry,” Athena pointed out. “So why should all maidens?”

Poseidon thrust his trident into the air. As always, water dripped from it and him to puddle beneath his chair. “That’s because many youths prefer the life of a soldier,” he declared.

“That’s right!” exclaimed another godboy. “War trumps marriage any day.”

Aphrodite rolled her eyes. “Oh, really? And which do you think contributes more to the survival of the human race?”

Mr. Cyclops beamed at her. “Good point.”

Just then the school intercom crackled to life. “Attention, godboys and goddessgirls!” thundered Principal Zeus in a deafeningly loud voice. Everyone, including Mr. Cyclops, automatically reached up to cover their ears. “A special assembly on chariot safety starts in ten minutes. Please make your way to the auditorium.”

Looking somewhat annoyed, Mr. Cyclops muttered something about unwarranted interruptions to class time. But then, with a sigh, he said, “All right, everyone. Please line up at the door.”

Normally, Aphrodite would have welcomed a chance to get out of class, but not today. Not when the topic of discussion was such an interesting one. Besides, the chariot safety assembly was repeated every year, and it was deadly dull. Who among them didn’t know that racing into a turn could cause a chariot to tip over? Duh. Or that you shouldn’t ever fly directly into the sun?

After the assembly, which Zeus had livened up with a real demonstration of racing chariots for a change, it was time for lunch. Aphrodite was starved. As she stood in the cafeteria line with Athena and their other two best friends, dark-haired Artemis and pale-skinned Persephone, her stomach began to rumble like a volcano about to erupt.

Her friends laughed. “Somebody’s hungry,” said Artemis.

Aphrodite blushed. “Yes, very.” She didn’t say it loudly, but considering the response, she might just as well have shouted it. A dozen godboys in line ahead of her whipped around at the sound of her voice, eager to get her attention.

“You can have my spot, Aphrodite!” yelled Poseidon from ten spaces up the line.

He took a step toward her, dripping water onto another godboy’s sandal-clad feet. Ares, who was the cutest godboy in school in Aphrodite’s opinion, glowered at him. “Watch where you’re dripping, Fishface!” Droplets of water flew as he shook one foot and then the other. Poseidon glowered back, his mouth opening and closing like a fish’s.

Ignoring him, Ares turned toward Aphrodite. “Take my place,” he said with a charming smile. “I insist.”

Aphrodite hesitated. Ares could be a bit of a bully at times, but she had to admit there was something about him she found... well, irresistible. He was just so muscular, so blond, and so blue eyed. Smiling uncertainly, she took a step in his direction.

Athena grabbed Aphrodite’s elbow. “Surely you’re not going to take him up on that,” she said in a low voice that Ares couldn’t hear. “It wouldn’t be fair to the other goddessgirls in line ahead of us.”

“Oh. I guess you’re right,” said Aphrodite. She’d just stepped back in line when a godboy named Atlas called out. “Hey, Aphrodite! Come stand by me!” Flexing his bulging biceps, he picked up the scrawny godboy next to him and held him over his head. “You can have Hephaestus’s place.”

Squirming this way and that, Hephaestus protested. “Put me down, you big ox.”

Aphrodite sighed. “For the love of Zeus! Leave him alone, Atlas.”

Atlas shrugged. “If you say so.” He set Hephaestus down, but not before a fight broke out between Poseidon and Ares.

“Godness!” exclaimed Persephone, anxiously twisting a red curl around her index finger. “Someone’s going to get hurt!”

Frowning, Aphrodite took a step toward the boys. “Persephone’s right. Stop it! What are you—in kindergarten?”

Sheepishly, the two godboys separated. In a voice as lovely as she was, but which permitted no argument, she said, “I appreciate the offers, but I’ll wait my turn like everyone else.”

Ten minutes later, when she was seated at last with her three goddessgirl friends at their favorite table in the lunchroom, Aphrodite dipped her spoon into the delicious yambrosia. After she’d taken only a bite or two, however, she shoved the bowl away, too annoyed to finish in spite of her hunger.

“Full already?” asked Artemis, as she dug with gusto into her own bowl. Her three dogs, a bloodhound, a greyhound, and a beagle, lay at her feet. They accompanied her everywhere.

“No, just fed up with godboys,” Aphrodite declared. “They’re so obsessed with weapons and war. They even battle for my attention!”

“Poor you,” Persephone teased between sips of nectar. “A lot of goddessgirls would die to have godboys notice them.” As an afterthought, she added, “But of course they can’t, since they’re all immortal.”

Athena set down the shimmery blue Beauty-ology textscroll she’d been scanning as she ate. With a puzzled look she said to Aphrodite, “But I thought you liked the attention.”

Aphrodite shrugged. “Not really. If another godboy offers to carry my scrolls or to help me with my homework just one more time today, I swear I’ll scream!”

“Really?” Athena leaned forward, her brows knit. “But in Hero-ology class you said that everyone should have the chance to fall in love.”

“I was talking about mortals,” said Aphrodite. “And anyway, just because a godboy fusses over you, it doesn’t mean he’s in love with you.” Indeed, she couldn’t help wondering if the handsome young godboys who fluttered around her like moths to a flame might disappear in a flash if she weren’t beautiful. There was no way to know because she’d always been... well... naturally pretty.

“But most girls like it when boys fuss over them,” Athena persisted. She seemed oddly interested in the topic given her protest that “some maidens” would rather be left alone to study.

Aphrodite raised one of her perfectly shaped eyebrows. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d think maybe you wanted to be fussed over.”

“Who me? Ha!” said Athena. “That’s the last thing on my mind,” she murmured as she buried her nose in her Beauty-ology scroll again.

Aphrodite traded amused glances with Persephone and Artemis, who then quickly moved on to talk about other things. But Aphrodite only half listened as she stared at Athena’s bent head. A straight-A student, Athena was easily the brightest of the four friends. She was also the youngest, though they were all in the same grade. Until this moment, Athena had never shown any curiosity about godboys, and they in turn, probably sensing her indifference, overlooked her.

Athena glanced up from her textscroll. “What?” she asked. “Why are you staring at me like that?”

“No reason,” Aphrodite said lightly. But as Athena returned to her textscroll, the wheels in Aphrodite’s brain began to spin faster than the racing chariot Zeus had driven in assembly that morning. Within moments she concluded that Athena had in fact been hinting that she’d welcome the attention of godboys. And while Aphrodite might be fed up with godboys’ annoying antics, she loved stirring up romance for others! True, things hadn’t worked out so well between Paris and Helen—that pesky Trojan War and all—but at least she’d tried to set them up.

That’s it! she thought excitedly. If she could help mortals find love, then why not a goddessgirl, too? She could use her talents to help Athena find her first crush! But she would need a game plan.

Aphrodite drummed her well-manicured, powder-pink-polished fingernails on the tabletop, sneaking glances at Athena’s long, unstyled, brown hair. At her face free of makeup. At her frumpy, plain white chiton. Suddenly an idea came to her. A makeover! That was exactly what her friend needed to make MOA’s godboys sit up and take notice.

Now that she’d come up with a plan, Aphrodite couldn’t wait to get started!

Charming series
By Jennifer Rummel - YABookNerd
When Aphrodite walks into a room - all conversation from godboys stops. They all turn to look at her. While she loves the idea of love and matchmaking, she hates all the attention.

She decides to help Athena and give her a makeover. Aphrodite does such an amazing job that soon all the godboys flock to Athena instead. Aphrodite isn't sure she likes the change in behavior.

In fact, she might be a tad bit jealous of all the attention her friend's getting. How can she get things to change back to normal without causing a rift with one of her best friends?

My Thoughts: A cute tween tale that focuses on jealously and boy mixed with friendship. Aphrodite and Athena have plenty of misunderstandings and miscommunication- including eavesdropping between them. I love this series for the potential romance between the goddess girls and the godboys, for the strong friendship between the goddess girls, and for the fun twists on mythology.

3.5 stars from Small Review blog
By small review
Like all the books in the Goddess Girls series, Aphrodite the Beauty can be read as a standalone and it is not necessary to have read the previous books.

I liked this book, but not as much as the previous two. The story was solid and continues with the excellent blend of mythology and real-life issues that I have come to expect from this series. The only drawback for me was Aphrodite herself. I didn't relate as well to her as a character and I found her to have a little less depth than Athena or Persephone. I also didn't like the way she treated a certain character, but her actions were consistent with mythology and creatively adapted to a more modern and younger audience.

Plus, her feelings and actions, while perhaps not the nicest, were feelings that I'm sure many girls experience (I know I did! And I behaved much the same way when I was that age.) Despite my qualms with Aphrodite herself, her story was cute and I'm sure will ring true with many MG girls (probably not so much boys). Hephaestus makes an appearance as an adorable secondary character.

Fun story!

Review by This Kid Reviews Books! Find me on the web!

Aphrodite is so beautiful that when a god-boy looks at her, he falls in love with her. When she gives Athena a make-over, Athena starts to get all the attention. Aphrodite starts to feel jealous of her friend. When Ares falls for Athena, Aphrodite gets very upset at her friend. Aphrodite wants everything to go back to the way it was without loosing Athena's friendship. But what can she do?

The Goddess Girls seems to be a series written for girls 8+ years old (and I'm a boy) and the mythology in the books doesn't really follow the actual story (I am a fan of mythology). So why do I like these books so much that I am going to read the rest of the series? Well, for one thing they're funny, I actually like how the myths were twisted! I also liked how the stories are a parody of the greek goddesses (and gods) lives as if they were pre-teens today (but in ancient Greece). The stories are written well and deal with some of the same issues all pre-teens go through -just in a Mount Olympus, immortal kind of way ! The books are fun to read and not super challenging so they would also be good for younger advanced readers. So if you can get over the fact that Medusa isn't cursed by Athena who turns her beautiful hair into hideous snakes but rather Medusa mistakenly uses Athena's "snakey-poo" shampoo that turns her hair into snakes, you'll like the book. It isn't mythology, it's a good story. Maybe it will also get kids interested in reading about the actual myths too!

Law and Colonial Cultures: Legal Regimes in World History, 1400-1900 (Studies in Comparative World History), by Lauren Benton

This book advances a new perspective in world history, arguing that institutions and culture--and not just the global economy--serve as important elements of international order. Focusing on colonial legal politics and the interrelation of local cultural contests and institutional change, it uses case studies to trace a shift in plural legal orders--from the multicentric law of early empires to the state-centered law of the colonial and postcolonial world. Benton shows how Indigenous subjects across time were active in making, changing, and interpreting the law--and, by extension, in shaping the international order.

Review
"Lauren Benton's important new book deserves a careful reading from both legal historians and historians of imperialism. ...Benton is to be congratulated for these insights, and for bringing such far-flung, complex subjects together into a compelling whole. Naturally, in so doing, she reaches conclusions with which not everyone will be comfortable, but that is what good history does." H-Net: Humanities and Social Sciences Online

"Lauren Benton has written an original and fascinating book...a major contribution to the fields of history and law." Canadian Journal of Law and Society

"This valuable compilation of contexts, examples, and analyses constitutes a fascinating and accessible read for scholars across disciplines. ...Benton's research is impeccable in its careful conceptualization and the breadth and depth of its analysis." American Journal of Sociology

"This is a bold, sweeping, and highly innovative book...The sheer scale of this book, and its conceptual achievements, will make it a landmark in world history." American Historical Review

"The greatest strength of this book is its development of a sophisticated argument that can act as a touchstone for future research on global cultural history...Benton provides a powerful counterpoint to the overdetermined narrative of European expansion...this book is a landmark in the creation of a more complex modern global cultural history built on more than just expansion and resistance, but on a shifting negotiation of power, culture, difference, homogenization, identity, and rights." Journal of World History

World History and Legal Regimes
By Tron Honto
World histories are extremely difficult to do because it requires the historian to make broad, sweeping assertions about many different cultures concerning which the historian can never be an expert in each. As a specialist in Islam, I for one was sometimes left deeply dissatisfied by some of the sections focusing on Islam. This, in turn, made me question the nature of the analyses on areas concerning which I have no indepth knowledge such as in Spanish and Portugese empires.
This being said, however, the general outline presented in the book as a tendency of colonial cultures with regard to legal institutions (from multi-centric and informal to strictly state-centered and enforced with centralized compulsion) is widely corroborated and extremely helpful in grasping the evolution and centrality of legal institutions in the formation of these colonialial and, subsequently, post-colonial cutlures. The argument, therefore, makes great strides in supplementing merely economic historical accounts, such as dependency theory a la Wallerstein, with studies of colonial institutions as such and not as a mere apparatus of economic ideologies.

I found this book to be extraordinary -- it changed my thinking about jurisdictional conflicts in colonial societies. Benton has adroitly analyzed the impact of jurisdictional tensions on global legal regimes. A must-read for legal historians and others in the field.

Good read
By Karl Krotke
This is a good read for an alternative understanding of World History's historiography. Not an easy read as a legal history, but interesting.
