About the Author
Michael Zigarelli is an associate professor of management at Charleston Southern University and former dean of the Regent University School of Business. He holds degrees from Rutgers (Ph.D.), Cornell (M.A.), and Lafayette College (B.A.). His research in management, practical theology, law, and ethics has appeared in numerous scholarly journals, and he has authored ten books including The Minster's MBA, Influencing Like Jesus, Management by Proverbs, and Cultivating Christian Character. Dr. Zigarelli lives with his wife and four children in South Carolina.

Good concept and unique

In The Minister's MBA, George Babbes (Professor of Marketing and Strategy at Azusa Pacific University) and Michael Zigarelli (Professor of Management at Charleston Southern University) offer ministry leaders a crash course in business management concepts to use in churches and parachurch/non-profit organizations. Much of the book covers typical topics that would be covered in lectures and textbooks in any graduate school of management, but the authors (both of whom work with churches and parachurch/non-profit organizations) try to show how these secular management tools can be used in ministry settings. The authors claim that "despite the moral failure of some business leaders, the pathway to operational excellence and maximum impact - the very things for which so many ministry leaders pray - are also found and perfected in the business world. . . . God has placed at your disposal a tremendous array of powerful management tools - value-neutral tools that, when used properly, will take your ministry where you've always dreamed it could go" (p. 7, 9).

Nothing in the book is revolutionary if one has read other church administration or church leadership books, but the unique feature is in the authors' presentation of the material. Throughout the book, the authors develop a theme that parallels the design of a typical one-year executive Master of Business Administration (MBA) program. The book is divided into three sections that the authors call "semesters" and each section has four brief chapters that the authors call "courses" for each semester. The overall curriculum theme and the packaging of the material are very clever. Even the "shape" of the book lends to more of a guidebook format than a textbook. The book is less than 200 pages and measures 9 inches by 5 inches, giving the book the look and feel of a pocket size travel guide that someone would carry in his or her back pocket. No chapter is over fifteen pages long. In making the MBA curriculum theme complete, the book concludes with a witty "Commencement Day Address" written by John Trent. Very few ministry leaders will normally pick up a book on management principles, but the format of this material helps greatly.

The focus of the first section or "semester" is on building a foundation for a church or organization for what the authors call "high performance" organizations (p. 1) and includes chapters or "courses" on operational mission (translating God's call into a one-sentence reason for being), organizational design (understanding the 7-S performance factors of strategy for pursuing the mission of the organization, structuring an organization, systems for linking and ordering activities, skills possessed by the organization, staff recruitment and development, style of leadership, and shared values and organizational culture), human resources (recruiting, motivating, and retaining great people), and executive decision making (understanding and overcoming cognitive biases of framing effects, information access effects, cognitive consistency and optimism effects, and group effects). The focus of the second section or "semester" is on formulating organizational strategy that creates and delivers value and includes chapters or "courses" on marketing (influencing behavior in a manner consistent with the organization's mission), innovation (identifying opportunities to increase impact), operations (delivering value and quality by design), and accounting and finance (moving from budgeting to stewardship). The focus of the final section or "semester" is on implementing strategy that achieves "maximum ministry success" (p. 4) and includes chapters or "courses" on the developing a strategy map (creating a blueprint for success), balanced scorecard (aligning everyone to measurable strategic priorities), implementation (mastering the art of well-orchestrated execution), and transformation (leading major change initiatives).

The design and "guidebook" feel of the book though is both a clever strength and some of its limitation as well later on in the book. Of the three sections of the book, the first section works best within the authors' format of brief chapters. The topics in this section (developing mission statements, organizational design, people management, and decision making) are well within the range of typical ministerial training and are the easiest to grasp for the reader. Most likely the reader will have both read other material in these specific areas and probably had some practical experience as well. As the topics get more complicated and less familiar to most ministers in the second and third section, these later chapters are a little more difficult to grasp with just a brief introduction. Being less of a textbook or workbook, there is just enough space to cover any of the "advanced" topics like strategy mapping and accounting in too great of depth.

The authors do include resources for further study at the end of each chapter. These suggested resources are excellent and needed for the reader to more fully understand the particular concepts. While not in anyway replace more through treatments of management and administration, The Minister's MBA does help to at least introduce some of these concepts that a church or organization can use to steward its limited resources.

Every good idea eventually boils down to hard work

In my experience (I'm pretty young - 38) but I've noticed that stuff just doesn't happen. Annointing, you must have. Submission to his leading - what else? Prayer - much prayer - without a doubt. But pencil to paper. A lot of talking with your voluntter staff. Dreaming. Critical thinking. Arguing. Sacrificing and driving for a mission. Living for people beyond your generation ...

The Minister's MBA has been an awesome catalyst for spiritual growth of a different kind for me.

IF you are more vision than manager; IF you are great in ideas, but short on practicality; IF you need a "legend" for the map ... get this book.

Boring content and devoid of Scripture references

The concept is good, chapter titles seem decent, however the content is quite boring. While I do not have an MBA, I run my own business as I plough through bible school for my degree. I'm not familiar with the authors, perhaps because my primary area of interest in theology is ecclesiology, therefore my guess is that a group of secular businesspeople decided to band together to write a book and package it for the Christian ministry.

A case could perhaps be made that seminary does not prepare a young minister well to run a church operationally. However to have a book almost devoid of Scripture and expect ministers to use it as a guidebook is perhaps not too wise. A church is not built on intellect or business principles; its foundation has to be on the word of God. I only spotted 2 paragraphs in the beginning of the book that referred to something about Jesus' disciples and Matt 10:16 - quite interesting how a methodology can be developed from a single narrative of the bible. And further down in the book, how Joseph got sold into slavery in Gen. 37 is used as an example of the result of perceived inequity.

this is a good resource to gain a beginning knowledge about cell salts 1-27. Pictures are good, however to help gain clarity on facial diagnosis, color is a must and my kindle falls flat on that area. Buy the book instead. I suggest getting Facial Diagnosis of Cell Salt Deficiencies by David R. Card as well as The Biochemic System of Medicine; Comprising of the Theory, Pathological Action, Therapeutic application, Materia Medica and Repertory of Schuessler's Twelve Biochemic Remedies by Dr. George R Carey for far more information, which leads to a greater understanding. There are some discrepancies between what Card's facial diagnosis depicts and Ms. Schoenfelds book states as well as information she gives, is not as in depth as Dr. Carey's book, however, all in all, this is a good book to have in one's library, it should, however, not be your only one

Very thourough

I recommend this book to anyone wishing to use tissue salts. It is a very comprehensive book that includes both the physical and mental aspects for each remedy. I wish there was more examples of facial analysis but I understand that this topic is not the main focus of the book.

Learned and am learning a lot

Very good cross referencing and rounded out ideas on what salts to use for what issues and why. What body parts and organs use what salts for which purposes. Not as much facial diagnosis in example pictures as I was hoping for, but she does write a checklist for each salt for observation of possible deficiencies. Information I wasn't expecting and was glad to see is included as far as radiation, EMF, etc. Also expanded information on salts 13 through 27 that usually are not mentioned in a book about cell salts or tissue salts. At least not that I have run into before. I'm glad I got the Kindle version as it is much easier to do a search and get results than paging through a book or marking a book. Quite nice. She does have formulas for various situations listed quite extensively.

About the Author
Ingo R. Titze is Distinguished Professor of Speech Science and Voice at The University of Iowa and Executive Director of the National Center for Voice and Speech at the University of Utah. His formal education is in physics and electrical engineering, but he has devoted much of his studies to vocal music and speech. He has authored Principles of Voice Production, Fascinations with the Human Voice, and The Myoelastic Aerodynamic Theory of Phonation. He has also appeared on educational television series, Innovation, Quantum, and Beyond 2000. Dr. Titze is a recipient of the Jacob Javits Neuroscience Investigation Award and the American Laryngological Association Award. He is a Silver Medalist of the Acoustical Society of America, a recipient of Honors of the Association of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Dr. Titze is an active singer. Katherine Verdolini Abbott is Professor of Communication Science and Disorders and faculty member of the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, where she is also a faculty member of the Carnegie Mellon - University of Pittsburgh Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition. She completed her M.S. in Speech and Hearing Sciences in 1983 at Indiana University and her Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology at Washington University in 1991. A trained singer, her research interests include laryngeal wound healing, cognitive influences in voice training, and clinical trials. She is a recipient of the Honors of the Association of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Dr. Verdolini Abbott is a former Editor for the Journal of Speech, Language and Hearing Research.

About the Author
Guy Dutson is an ornithologist and tour-leader, and is the world's leading authority on the birds of the south-west Pacific, a region in which he has described or rediscovered several species. He has led expeditions to the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea, in the course of which he rediscovered the Superb Pitta on Manus. Expeditions to Indonesia and the Philippines led to the rediscovery of the Tanahjampea Monarch and the find for which he is perhaps best known, the Cebu Flowerpecker. In 2008 Dutson described a new species, the Vanikoro White-eye.

An Excellent Field Guide to Exotic Locales

It's a pleasure to leaf through this guide, which will serve very well indeed the author's and artists' intention to "stimulate the study and conservation" of the beautiful birds of a remote and alluring part of the globe. The guide comprises two sections, one containing 86 beautiful plates with their facing-page captions and distribution charts, the other the species accounts. The texts are headed with the species' English, French, and scientific names, often with notes indicating different taxonomic approaches, and include a description, an often extensive treatment of similar species, voice descriptions, accounts of habit and habitat often including flight style, a statement of each bird's conservation status, and a detailed (often island-by-island) summary of geographic distribution. To minimize page flipping, the guide's passerine plates are broken into seven color-coded sections, one for each of the major island groups included. Thus, the birder visiting New Caledonia and confronted with an unfamiliar songbird has to consult only five plates, the visitor to the Bismarcks 11, and so on; the non-passerines, many of which, especially the water birds, are widely distributed among the islands, occupy the first 49 plates. There is necessarily some repetition in the case of species occurring across several island groups, but the artists and the designer have taken this as an opportunity to display regional variation in several species; have a look, for example, at the various Island Thrushes or the Cardinal Myzomelas, some of which differ strikingly from their counterparts on other islands.

A Comprehensive Guide to a rarely covered area of the Birding Globe

The birds of the Bismark Archipelago, the Solomans, Vanuatu and New Caledonia hold some real avian treasures and few guides have covered these areas with as much thoroughness as Guy Dutson. The artwork is very good and consistent and there is a wealth of information on the region.

The book begins with the contents which is fairly standard till you get to the plates list which are color coded for the region and sub-region. 60 plates illustrate the birds of the whole region then there are 9 plates for the species specific to the Solomans, then those of Makira, Rennell, Temotu and so on totaling 86 plates in all. This makes each of the specific regions very easy to find to compare those specific species one is looking for.

Then comes the introduction with several nice maps of the islands in the region concerned and information about island types, habitat, endemism, migration and bird topography, then a nice section on birding sites. A list of threatened species and where they exist and a couple of pages explaining the color coding in the book which is quite complex but needs to be in a region covered by so many islands.

This is then followed by a complete list of the species of Melanesia. Each island has a column with the birds status color coded from the information on the preceding page about if it is endemic, a migrant, a resident etc...

Following this come the plates. Each species is shown with a couple of depictions for moult, flight, juvenile or different plumages where relevant. Most of the plates are not crowded though a few with flight shots area little but I prefer this to going to plates depicting flight shots then going back to the plate with a roosted bird for comparison. All the images are bright, clean and show good detail. The information on the left has some description notes with a chart for each of the islands it inhabits with color codes for its status there. There is a also a page reference for the second part of the book which is the species accounts. These begin after the 86 color plates. The species accounts elaborate more on each of the species concerned within the plates with notes on description, similar species, voice, habits, conservation status and range. The book finishes with a gazetteer and index.

Overall this is a fantastic guide with beautiful plates and good information about the species concerned. You'll need to learn the color codes but these are vital to the book and your ease of use in the field. It is not a slim, compact guide by any means but when you have the need for such complex information and so many species it's not easy to slim it down without losing too much information. This guide is still portable and will fit in any bumbag for ease of transport throughout the day. This is also the most current and up to date guide to the region and great for any lucky birder in the field or dreaming birder in the armchair.

Mayr and Diamond's book The Birds of Northern Melanesia cover some of the same species though this is not a guide but about research and endemism across the islands of the Bismark Archipelago and the Solomans. Pratt's guide to The birds of Hawaii and the Tropical Pacific cover the rest of the Pacific and duPont's book on South Pacific Birds also covers some of the region.

Business Ethics

I recently purchased this textbook for my Business Ethics class. The price was very reasonable compared to many other website offers. It is lightweight, small and is in mint condition. It doesn't have any writing/highlighting/wear or tear on any of the pages. The book is an easy to read book. It also came before the estimated delivery date, which was a huge plus for me, because I am a current college student. I would recommend this book to anyone who studies business, Or Needs the book for their Business Ethics class.

A Textbook that I Kept!

During my MBA curriculum I had some pretty dry textbooks. This was not the case for this business ethics book! I actually enjoyed reading the case studies (I know, weird right?). I kept this book instead of selling it at the end of the semester.
