About the Author
Douglas J. Futuyma is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolution at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, USA. His major research interests include evolution of host specificity in herbivorous insects and of interactions among insects and plants, speciation, and evolution of community structure. Dr. Futuyma received the 1997 Sewall Wright Award of the American Society of Naturalists and the 2012 Joseph Leidy Award of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. He has served as President of the Society for the Study of Evolution (1987), the American Society of Naturalists (1994), and the American Institute of Biological Sciences (2007), and was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1996 and the National Academy of Sciences in 2006. Dr. Futuyma has served as Editor of Evolution and is currently Editor of the Annual Review of Ecology, Evolution, and Systematics.

Great for upper level undergraduate

This book was well organized and interesting. It seemed to be overly wordy in some sections, but overall pretty good. The author includes a plethora of colorful diagrams, pictures, and graphs to help the reader understand as well as to keep the reader's attention. The only thing I didn't really like was the way the author didn't have a separate section for human evolution. This is usually what students find the most interesting so it is sprinkled throughout the book in an attempt to make the various sections more interesting. I think this is an ok approach but I think human evolution deserves a dedicated section.

Looks Good...

Finally! I've been waiting for this book forever--Hippocrene really took their time with this one (from announcement to date of release). Let me start by saying that I have not worked through this entire book yet (I haven't had it that long). So, my review will just give you a general overview of what to expect.

Beginner's Icelandic conforms to Hippocrene's `Beginner Series' (the newer ones) format, which has been quite good, in my opinion. It is similar in form (and pedagogy) to Beginner's Norwegian, Beginner's Swedish, and Beginner's Danish.

You get the book and two CD's. The book has a brief cultural intro, pronunciation guide, 14 lessons, a two-way glossary, and a CD track list. The lessons generally consist of two dialogs, a vocabulary list, a phrase list, a grammar/structure/function section, and a few exercises.

The dialogs are FULLY transcribed into English (thank you, Hippocrene!), which saves so much time (not having to thumb back and forth from dictionary to dialog). The vocabulary lists could have been typeset into columns a bit better, but at least they are there! For a beginner's book, the grammar sections look to be a substantial intro to Icelandic's quite formidable grammar, but primarily stick with present tense on the verbs. As is the case with most all language books published within the last 20 years, the exercises are a bit skimpy, but they look to be good solid drilling rather than the `fluff' that many texts attempt to pass off as practice these days.

The CD's have an extensive intro to the alphabet, diphthongs, pronunciation of vowels, double consonants, stress, and length of vowels. Good stuff. After these guides, there is very little wasted time in English. You get the dialogs (full speed, then slower speed on some), and the vocabulary/expression lists. There are probably some dialogs skipped somewhere along the way (I've noticed this on other Beginner's Series CD's) to keep it down to two CD's. But what is there is great--good quality audio, clear speaking, no distracting background noise, and fairly pleasant voices.

As for Icelandic: although it's a member of the North Germanic family along with Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Faroese, etc, and although you hear that `North Germanic' sound to an extent, it is quite a bit more `exotic' sounding than its cousins. It brings to mind a touch of the sounds of Irish Gaelic and Russian. To me, Icelandic is one of the most beautiful languages, if not the most beautiful (of any I've heard). On the other hand, Icelandic grammar is significantly more difficult than it's cousin languages, so be prepared for that.

As I get further into the book (I'm polishing my Norwegian right now) I will add to this review any annoying tendencies that present themselves. But, truthfully, it looks to be a good solid introduction from what I've seen so far... provided you are willing to put in the study time--and you WILL need to put in study time with Icelandic. :-) Good luck with this beautiful language!

Currently the best on the market for nonlinguists

I've been running an Icelandic study group for about 3 years, fluent teachers are rare, so the group gets by without one. I've used Teach Your Self Icelandic (TYS), Colloquial Ice., Learning Icelandic and this one. Of the three, Beginner's Icelandic is by far and away the best. The word lists and glossaries have very good coverage of the words in the dialogs and exercises, so you won't need to resort to an external dictionary. The exercises are easy enough to fill in having only read the preceding chapters. However, there are far few exercises to really gain much mastery just by doing the exercises-- an important omission when you realize there is only one hard to find Icelandic workbook on the market.

Unusual for an Icelandic textbook, the author doesn't resort to throwing large tables of words and word endings at the user, but instead introduces word forms and their appropriate context at a rate that mere mortals can absorb.

The lessons take about one hour each, but if you only spend 14 hours studying the fourteen chapters, you will feel a bit rushed. That said, the pacing is excellent and no chapter feels dramatically more difficult or easy than any other.

The CD is well done-- the speakers don't speak too fast or slow.

In sum, if you are just starting, start with this book.

A good start

I'm only about halfway through this--I just started on the second CD today. I would heartily second the other reviewer's comments. The book is well-structured, and introduces the tricky Icelandic grammar in small bites so it isn't overwhelming. I, too, would like more exercises, but that seems to be the modern method. Older books I've seen have LOTS of exercises, but no answer key, which kind of defeats the purpose unless you're in a class.

Pronunciation is a real issue in Icelandic. It's not at all intuitive ('�' is pronounced 'ow', while 'au' is pronounced 'oy', just to give you an idea). So I find myself going back to the first CD over and over, just to listen.

The dialogs are more entertaining than is often the case, with a sort of story being played out. And yes, a couple of the chapters have two dialogs, and the second one is never on the recording. But any new words are included in the recording of the vocab list.

This is a good, solid introduction to Icelandic. You won't achieve full fluency, but you can't really expect that in 14 lessons, now, can you?

Food for the Body & Heart

I just finished making and eating a delicious pesto sauce recipe from a book written by my friend Noor titled: "Sunnah Superfoods: Miraculous remedies & recipes that will change your life forever!" The sauce was savory, tangy, and truly hit the spot. It's loaded with healthy fat (olive oil), as well as leafy green vegetables (parsley, cilantro, & kale). What I loved most about this book is that it not only lists recipes that are good for you, but also lists foods (before the recipe section of the book) that the prophet Muhammad(peace and blessings be upon him) specifically told us would be good for us 1400 years ago. Noor also includes personal stories and modern research to show how these foods are loaded with vitamins to make us feel better. In my life, I have met many people, and I always find something beautiful about every person that I meet. For Noor, what I love the most about her as a person is that she is very passionate about genuinely helping others. It's hard to meet people who want to help without some sort of personal gain. I always feel valued when I engage with her, and it shows very clearly in her book and how she lives her life. I definitely recommend that you all try the pesto recipe! It definitely will be a staple with my meals from now on

The titte says it all: Sunnah SUPERfoods

This is more than just a cook book! This book is real food for thought with explanations on the benefits of each recipe! I loved the brownie bites with the caramel sauce! I love the layout of the book: Part one, The Superfoods & their Benefits. Then Part two: Noor's Sunnah Superfoods recipes. She gives thorough explanations on the benefits of all the sunnah foods and where in the sunnah they are mentioned with authentic proof. I can't wait for part 2!

I love this book

I love this book. Not only is it filled with amazing, health recipes that are easy to make, it includes a few pages on the etiquettes and sunan of food according to the Qur'an and Ahadith. It has a chapter on foods mentioned in the Qur'an and hadith with explanation of their benefits. I really love the smoothie and juice recipes and the salads are AMAZING. Healthy eating according to the Sunnah is the best!

Harold Schechter is a historian: he takes old files and yellowed newspaper clippings, and brings their stories to life. Deviant is about everyone's favorite ghoul, Ed Gein--whose crimes inspired the writers of Psycho, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Silence of the Lambs. Schechter deftly evokes the small-town 1950s Wisconsin setting--not pretty farms and cheese factories, but infertile soil and a bleak, hardscrabble existence. The details of Gein's "death house" are perhaps well known by now, but the murderer's quietly crazy, almost gentle personality comes forth in this book as never before. As Gary Kadet wrote, in The Boston Book Review, "Schechter is a dogged researcher [who backs up] every bizarre detail and curious twist in this and his other books ... More importantly, he nimbly avoids miring his writing and our reading with minutiae or researched overstatement, which means that although he can occasionally be dry, he is never boring."

Harold Schechter is a professor of American literature and culture. Renowned for his true-crime writing, he is the author of the nonfiction books Fatal, Fiend, Bestial, Deviant, Deranged, Depraved, and, with David Everitt, The A to Z Encyclopedia of Serial Killers. He is also the author of Nevermore and The Hum Bug, the acclaimed historical novels featuring Edgar Allan Poe. He lives in New York State.

Gein still shocks after all these years

In the autumn of 1957, the nation learned of a nightmare unfolding in the little rural town of Plainfield, Wisconsin. A local recluse and simpleton by the name of Edward Gein murdered Bernice Worden, the owner of the local hardware store. A murder, even in 1950's America, wouldn't grab the attention of most folks, but this crime did. Local police searching Gein's farmhouse uncovered a soul shattering house of horrors. Not only did they find murder victim Worden in the most degrading condition, the police also discovered pieces of human bodies inside the house. Gein had fashioned soup bowls out of human skulls, masks out of human faces, and furniture out of human flesh. Every hour spent in the farmhouse turned up even more horrors, enough to make even the most hardened cop sick to his stomach. As the official inquiry deepened, America learned that a human monster lived in the most unlikely of settings, a man who embodied virtually every ghastly psychopathology known to modern science. The name Eddie Gein became synonymous with evil and he quickly became part of the dark side of American pop culture. Author Harold Schechter, a professor of American culture at Queens College, decided to write a factual account of the horrendous crimes of Edward Gein in an effort to finally set the record straight about one of America's premier boogeymen. "Deviant" is the result.
The author adroitly sums up Gein's family tree in a few pages. Despite what must have been a scarcity of information, Schecter reveals Ed's father as an orphan who went on to a successful career as an alcoholic and pest. The only thing Gein's father accomplished in life was his marriage to Augusta, Eddie's mother and an all around terror. According to "Deviant," the complex relationship between this overweening woman and her sons led directly to the seething mass of insanity that was Edward Gein. Augusta preached an ultra conservative Christian theology that saw all women in the world as inferior beings. She constantly railed about the sinfulness of the world to her two sons, making it clear that no woman would ever be good enough for her two boys. When not on a religious tirade, Augusta belittled her husband with a vigor rarely seen in the worst of marriages. After closing down a family run store in La Crosse, Augusta moved the clan to a farm near Plainfield. Ed's father died soon after, a shattered wreck barely missed by the rest of the family. His brother Henry died under mysterious circumstances while fighting a brushfire on the Gein property, a death many attributed to Ed because Henry had the temerity to question Augusta's iron rule. With the death of his mother shortly thereafter, Ed was left alone in the world for the first time.
Plainfield residents always liked Ed Gein. Sure, the guy was a little strange, always walking around with a dopey grin on his face while making the most outrageous statements about shrunken heads and other oddball stuff, but people generally thought him harmless. Many of his neighbors appreciated Ed showing up and helping out when work needed doing, or volunteering to watch the kids when the parents headed into town (!). Not until the police exposed Gein's repulsive activities did anyone have an inkling of what this guy was really about. Once they knew, the questions and outrageous stories started. Ed became a lightening rod for every mysterious disappearance in Wisconsin and neighboring states during the previous fifteen years. Even though police later cleared Gein in all but two murders--Bernice Worden and Mary Hogan--investigators and citizens continued to suspect Ed in a series of crimes. Moreover, townspeople came forward with supposedly "true" tales about close calls with the now exposed killer. The media, writes Schechter, carries most of the blame for printing the most ridiculous stories in an effort to sell papers. These media accounts went a long way towards installing Gein as an enduring pop cultural icon, an icon who continues to exert an influence even today.
I had a few problems with "Deviant" even though I consider the book well written and nicely researched. The biggest difficulty concerns the lack of footnotes. I imagine Schechter had to make a tradeoff with the publishing company since a book marketed to a general audience will not sell well if potential buyers see pages of citations. But a book from a scholar that purports to tell the facts behind the Gein case needs to contain citations so interested readers can reproduce his findings. I hate to harp about footnotes/endnotes since I like to avoid them whenever possible as much as the next guy, but a book that references this many public officials, newspapers, and public documents should have the notes.
"Deviant" does do a good job in several areas. Schechter presents compelling evidence that Gein was not a cannibal, a revelation that may come as a shock to many who consider themselves knowledgeable about the case. Not that it really matters, of course, because Ed indulged in so many appalling excesses that removing one stigma does nothing to lessen the overall horror of his activities. Still, it is nice to see someone finally look closely at all of the case documents in order to write the most truthful account possible. "Deviant" is grim stuff, some of the worst accounts of human atrocities captured on paper, but true crime buffs will appreciate Schechter's attention to detail concerning the man who many consider to be one of the worst criminals in American history. I also recommend "Deviant" for first time readers with an itch to learn about the guy who inspired Norman Bates, Leatherface, and nearly every horror film psycho since the 1960s.

I'm halfway through this amazing book & can't put it down..I have learned so much more about Gein & this is because Harold Schechter is an amazing author, have other books by him & all make good reading.

So-so Sarah Cov book

Based of the reviews (sadly, only a few) of books on Sarah Coventry jewelry, this was the least offensive it seems, so I cautiously purchased it. I would have been far more impressed with the book if there were not at least two mis-identified pieces. When you are to the point of printing a book about something factual, maybe having ALL of the identifications should be correct. Comparing the items to my Sarah Cov catalogs, I cannot even understand how one of them was mis-identified--description and all--other than poor editing. I would not be this upset if the book only cost me $10 but I expect 100% correct AND no "guessed" names based on another similar piece--another very disappointing feature. Without having all catalogs from the company existence, how do I know that some others are not mis-identified?! Why bother to put it in the book if it is not double checked, verified, ummm CORRECT? Lastly one piece that is unidentified, I see all of the time with its correct name...not sure why it would not be identified other than the book is 8 years old and maybe back then it was still a mystery.
At least the photos are all clear--trying to end in a positive note.

Helpful For Collectors

This has been the most helpful book I have purchased for identifying Sarah Coventry jewelry. The pros are that it has many lovely pictures listed with the associated names and some description of the pieces. The author also has pictures of Sarah's catalog pages in 1969, 1972, and 1982 which can been read with a magnifying glass. The cons are that if you are looking for specific earrings, bracelets, or necklaces, there are several different places in the book where you must look. This book is not as efficient and organized as it could be. Also, the author has numerous pages on 'Signets', which do not help the collector. Overall it is the best I have purchased, but it is still time-consuming to identify pieces and lacking in organization.

Little did I know when I purchased this book it would have everything one would want to know about Sarah Coventry Jewelry and its history. It not only provides the price of the pieces when they were originally sold but their current estimated values. The pictures are good and the history excellent. It is evident the author spent a great deal of time and love into this comprehensive book.

About the Author
For over thirty years, Lawrence Harbison was charge of new play acquisition for Samuel French, Inc., during which time his work on behalf of playwrights resulted in the first publication of such subsequent luminaries as Jane Martin, Don Nigro, Tina Howe, Theresa Rebeck, Jose Rivera, William Mastrosimone, Charles Fuller, and Ken Ludwig, among many others. He is now a freelance editor, primarily for Smith and Kraus, Inc. For many years, he wrote a weekly column on his adventures in the theater for two Manhattan Newspapers. His new column, On the Aisle with Larry, is a weekly feature on the Smith and Kraus website.
