Fernando "FerFAL" Aguirre is a father, husband and survivalist that has lived through the Argentine socio-economic collapse of 2001, and the consequences such collapse had in the years that followed. He's the author of numerous articles found on line and is recognized among the survival and preparedness community for his personal experience and no-nonsense approach to survivalism. A Very Important Book on Survivalism

1)The mindset of the American survivalist movement was set by Mel Tappan several decades ago: a) Retreat to a small town 400 miles or so from large cities b) Become self-sufficient. By and large, other survivalist writers have uncritically accepted Mel Tappan's strategy --because they wrote based on uncritical acceptance of a theory, not on actual practical experience.

2) However, Ferfal argues persuasively against Tappan's strategy based on Ferfal's experiences in surviving Argentina's economic collapse. He notes that government will always survive, that it will confiscate food and other supplies from the countryside to feed the cities, and that it will maintain the rule of law. All of which significantly affect one's survival plans and stockpiling. For example, he notes that open carry of assault rifles will get you arrested and imprisoned (the wealthy will ALWAYS maintain a police force to protect them) -- and that a concealed pistol and folding pocketknife is more practical.

3) Money will be of PRIME importance --not a curious artifact. Mel Tappan could afford to ignore this because he had married an wealthy heiress.

4) Ferfal agrees with Mel Tappan that isolated retreats in the rural countryside are likely to become what police called "secondary crime scenes" --places where residents are tortured by bandits into revealing hidden stores and are then murdered. He and Tappan both agreed on the importance of being part of a tight-knit, mutually-protective community.

3) What led American survivalists --and Mel Tappan -- into error was that they lacked security clearances and hence knowledge of US Government plans to maintain itself and its control even in the worst disaster: Major Nuclear War. Declassifed FEMA documents show a massive effort by the Government to relocate officials to emergency bunkers, to maintain control through hardened communications networks, and to seize essential resources (food stockpiles,etc) as soon as fallout radiation declines using databases of where the warehouses are located. This to supplement the US Government's own huge caches. Google "FEMA 160 Recovery From Nuclear Attack" or "Atchison Storage Facility".

4) Ferfal's view of the post-disaster environment is far more probable and realistic than Tappan's -- and hence his plans, advice, tactics, and equipment recommendations are more valuable.

5) By the way, anyone planning to retreat to Montana should Google "Malmstrom Air Force Base" and look at FEMA's predicted fallout radiation levels for that state if the Russians ever attack the Minuteman complex buried there. They might also read Jared Diamond's "Collapse" re the fate of isolated colonies like Viking Greenland, Easter Island and the Anazazi settlements in New Mexico. The only places
left with low populations are marginal for agriculture and would die off in the first drought.

Honest and brutal, if you don't think survival is brutal, you really need this book!

I have a background from one of the most famous military elite units in the world; I'm trained in many "black arts", have been to wars and revolutions and I'm getting paid mega bucks to look after people. I don't say this to brag, just to state that I'm not a daydreaming wannabe. I got a lot out of the book, can attest to that the tips actually are sound and that I learned something from the book, so will you.

The author bases his writing on his experience living with his family in Argentina the last few years. The book tells regular people how to live trough extraordinary times. There is much non nonsense information about, kit, tactics, food and how to cope as a family during a crisis or a breakdown of society.

If you have seen the news the last couple of years you realize it might soon affect YOU and your family. Connately to what many books and authors tell you: even after a major economic and political crises life goes on, it's just "different"...

Actually I read this book when it first arrived a few moths ago. Having dumped into "FerFal"'s homepage while researching Argentina as a country to relocate to. I found his homepage giving extremely good and sound advices, both about Argentina but also security in general.

A lot of books are written about survival. I first got interested in the subject in the late 70s, and the books from then are still around, some good, some dated. With the current state of the world we see an avalanche of new books joining the classics, and some old once that never was classics in the first place gaining new fame.

Most "survival" books are unrealistic and at times naive. For instance on fighting and weapons, either they have a fantasy aspect to what is required or they overlook it completely. There will be violence in these scenarios and the bad guys ALWAYS have weapons; this book actually takes this into consideration and has the most matter-of-fact outlook on it I have seen.

I think one of the highlights of the book is the parts about upgrading yourself. Survival is, funny enough about being fit. Being prepared sure is a good thing, but having all the food and guns in the world is of no good if you are not fit and willing to fight for it; you will not survive, period! I know a lot of people that are not prepped for anything more than the next bar fight, but they sure as hell would take all your stock when TSHTF if you are not fit and armed.

The examples the author uses about the misconceptions often held as dogma on survival is alone worth the price of the book. A lot of thing written other place might get you killed in real life

So his language is not correct, neither is mine, who cares? You are not getting a book about grammar but about staying alive in the real world gone mad, THAT'S where this book delivers.

Is it perfect? No, I don't mind the brutal langue or imperfect English, but I find some of the topics could have been edited better from the homepage to the book, a few photos added and so on. But all in all it is by far the best book on the subject I have read.

Get this book and start to prepare. The worst that can happen from being prepared is that you get peace of mind and a better quality of life. The best thing that can happen is that you actually might survive to enjoy it.

The superlative addition to modern survivalist literature!!!

First of all, this is by light years the finest work on survivalism I've yet encountered. When you compare this book, which is based on experience, with others based on theory, you can arrive at only one conclusion: there is no substitute for experience!

To elaborate, the probable difficulties facing a survivalist group holing up in a shared retreat in remote regions is really brought to light by the wisdom of this book. That people are territorial creatures (even close family members) and can't so much as get through a Christmas holiday season under one roof without major differences of opinion ought to speak volumes for the massive potential for crisis-sized problems in a highly stressful conventional survivalist setup. And then there's the ongoing real life example of Zimbabwe where a hyperinflated currency, collapse of infrastructure and economy, and tyrannical government have combined to provide us with a living picture of how bad an idea it is to try to stand firm in a remote farm retreat. This book highlights such dangers (and more) and dispels so much of the mythology surrounding preparedness that it absolutely must be widely disseminated as a strong antidote to mainstream survivalist error.

And of course, for someone whose first language isn't even English, this book is an outstanding achievement. Which brings me to another point. Everyone should, as the author states, factor an emigration strategy into their contingency panning. It's a serious limitation on your options if you only ever consider relocation within your own country. Better to have a plan B, C and D. And to learn a relevant foreign language could one day prove priceless too, which is something we in the Anglosphere tend to overlook in our arrogance.

In sum then, don't hesitate to acquire this must-have book and re-evaluate your survival planning while you still have the chance.

Lots of laughs! Hope they make this into a movie!

I am always a happy camper when ordering from Amazon! They never let me down. We pre-ordered the book during the Summer and it arrived the day of it's release. People don't notice the small stuff but I do. As I took the book out of the package I noticed the book has a smooth texture on the front cover. The book cover in general has a smooth grip- like texture, lol. I always love the smell of a new book but the smooth outside texture of the book adds a good feature to the book.
The book has comic like pictures, but don't think it's a comic strip type book overall. It is a well worded book from the first page to the last page (217 pages overall) each page has a complete word filled page but the pictures adds to the imagination of the child reading this book. My son started reading this book series at 8. He's now 10 and he LOVES this book series so much he looks forward to the new books that come out and every once in a while re-reads the older book series. We even have family movie nights and I don't mind watching the couple movies that have been made from the "Diary of A Whimpy Kid" book series. I'm 32 and I find parts of the movie hillarious so I can only imagine reading this book as a kid. I can't say enough good things about this book or any other book from the series. If you're a parent like me, you'd rather watch your child read VS. Playing video games or watching TV programs. At least while reading it engages a child's imagination as well as improving their spelling. Some studies has shown that kids, especially those that are more visual learners, spelling improves the more they read. :)
I will be on the lookout for more books by this same Author (Jeff Kinney). Don't hesitate to buy the book for your child (ren). I took a glimpse of a few pages already while my son is still at school and it's pretty funny! Ha ha ha. I posted some pictures for previewing. :-D

Excellent comprehensive text on climate change

This book provides a great overview of recent climate change, the impact of humans on the climate system, and the impacts the changes in climate (including likely future change) have on humans and other life on Earth. The current thinking in the field of climate change is reflected throughout the text, and each chapter covers the important topics at hand. The diagrams on sea-level rise are particularly interesting and extremely helpful in understanding the material. Overall, it provides great insight into an important issue that is (and should be) at the forefront of every scientist's mind today.

Great Introduction to a Complicated Topic

With all of the hype and misinformation spread by interest groups on both sides of the climate change argument, it is helpful to have a book that explains the basic science. Fletcher does a great job of helping readers understand how to think about climate change rather than telling us what to think.

The finest text book on climate change, bar none

A very important book, and so accessible. With so much political and international debate around climate change, it is critical we listen to what the science is actually telling us. Fletcher does just that. On a question so laden with bias, Fletcher lets the science do the talking.
That alone would be enough to make this a notable text book, but the quality of the narrative sets this apart. The clear organization, tight prose and wonderful illustrations (some of the best I have ever seen) make this the go-to text book on climate change.

A Magnificient Book.

Bruce Fife's book is simply the best available read on a complex subject of Alzheimer's. The solution of using ketones from MCT oils or organic coconut oil is seminal. Ketones are the only other energy source the brain can use besides glucose. And since everyone has a certain amount of insulin resistance as we age, this leads to a gradual and continual energy deficit leading to gradual deterioration of brain function as the brain can't maintain adequate synapses, myelin sheaths, and general brain function. Only ketones can make up this deficit. If used long term, you'll most likely never get Alzheimers. If you already have it, Bruce Fife's program will arrest its further progress and restore quite a bit of function, provided you are not too far gone. I strongly recommend the book, the program and supplements recommended in it. The book should be a standard textbook in any medical and pharmacy school. Carry On- Simply Amazing!

It’s probably not mandatory to read Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl before reading Carry On, but it certainly helps. Fangirl’s protagonist Cath struggled with going away to college, being separated from her twin, and the role that Simon Snow fanfiction played in her new reality. Fangirl featured excerpts of both “canon” Simon Snow, and Cath’s fanfic spin on the global literary phenomenon.

Carry On is a full length Simon Snow novel. Simon Snow is similar to another series with a famous boy wizard, but it is wholly original. Carry On takes place during Simon’s eighth year at Watford, a school for magical children. Simon plays a unique role in the World of Mages; he is seen as the Chosen One, who will deliver them from evil. Namely, the Insidious Humdrum, who takes on the form of Simon as an eleven-year-old boy.

Simon has a best friend- Penelope, and a girlfriend- Agatha. Simon also has an archnemesis/roommate- Baz. When Baz doesn’t return at the beginning of term, Simon is suspicious. Is he planning something? Tensions are running high at Watford, and there is a divide between the Old Families and people who want social and political reforms.

When Baz finally returns at Watford, things are different. Instead of hating Baz, Simon is concerned about his welfare. And instead of wanting to kill Simon, Baz only wants to kiss him. As the World of Mages begins to crumble, Simon and Baz realize that they are stronger as allies than as enemies.

I loved this book. I loved everything about it. I loved Simon, and I loved Baz. I especially loved Penelope; she was smart and confident, and her fierce loyalty to Simon was so poignant. I loved the allusions to previous Simon Snow escapades that took place before Carry On; coming into the middle of the story was fascinating. I loved the way that Rowell developed her own language of magical spells by taking snippets of songs and popular phrases. I loved the multiple narrators; everyone has their own perspective, and the whole story wouldn’t have resonated as well if we only had Simon’s point of view. I loved the way that the tension between Simon and Baz built up slowly, so when they finally did come together, it made sense and it felt right.

I would absolutely recommend Carry On. I loved the Simon Snow excerpts in Fangirl, and I was so thrilled when Rainbow Rowell announced that she was going to write a Simon Snow novel. I devoured Carry On, and I know that this is a book that I am going to read multiple times. I have an Audible credit in my account, and I am going to use it to buy Carry On- probably as soon as I post this review! My only regret is that this is probably the end of Simon Snow- is receiving the rest of the series too much to ask for?

It was SO GOOD. Perfect writing and characters and romance. I loved every moment.

I think I'm going to say that this is the best book I have read this year. Why? Because it gave me butterflies. Actual real butterflies in my stomach. I haven't felt that in forever. But I felt it for Simon and Baz. And their romance. And it was the best feeling in the world. This book was simply perfection.

I just cannot deal with how perfect this book was. I couldn't stop reading once I started it today. I mean, I knew I would love it. But I didn't know I would love it this much. Sigh. The writing is stunning. The plot was exciting and interesting. The characters were amazing to read about. I adored them.

I don't even know how to write about this precious book. It looks gorgeous. And it is oh so pretty beneath the jacket cover. It is over five hundred pages, but it felt like much less than that, because I never wanted this book to end. Every page was amazing. Even though Baz doesn't show up until sometime after a hundred and fifty pages. Hmph. But reading about Simon was the very best. He's so cute. And so hungry. And skinny. And that just broke my heart. Sniffs. I love how he ate all the time, how much he ate too. I loved reading about his obsession with Baz, his sworn-enemy. There are some flashbacks to the previous seven years spent at the school. And they were all amazing. So much love. So interesting.

Carry On is a book about magic. A book about Simon Snow being the Chosen One. About him being the most powerful. Yet not being able to control his magic at all. It began as a fanfiction in the book Fangirl by Rainbow. And it is not the same as Harry Potter at all. Just so you know. It is much better. And I love Harry. But I loved Simon Snow even more. The books are different. And that's that. Now I must try to figure out how to write about this book. Because I loved it the very most. And I wish to share my love.

This book is the story of eighteen year old Simon. Whom is at his last year at a magic school. He is trying to stop a villain, who has the most silly name, lol. I adored getting to know Simon. Just, ugh. He was perfect. So cute and awesome. I loved how he wasn't the best at doing magic, but how he still tried his best. Loved how kind he was. Mostly, I just adored reading about Simon. I adored his relationship with his roommate, Baz. How they hated each other at first, lol. It was the cutest. Just so much love.

Simon also has a best friend. Penelope. And oh my gosh how much I adored her. She was so much fun and so smart and so kind and always there for Simon. Their friendship meant so much to me. I adored reading about her and getting to know her. This book is mostly told from Simon's point of view, but a few more too. Like Penny and Baz. And I loved it the most. Such amazing friendships. Such gorgeous writing. Such an awesome plot too. Sorry, my brain is a bit all over the place. I just loved it so much.

There was one character that I did not love in this book. And that was Agatha. Simon's girlfriend. Well, they never kiss in this book, and it has been sort-of over between them for a long time, though it takes them a few weeks to finally break it off. But point is. I didn't like her. She wasn't that kind to Simon at all. She would have cheated on him, if she could. And that's not okay. She also wasn't a nice person. Not even to Penny. Hmph. I didn't like how the book ended with her. But I wish I could have liked her more.

I will have you know that the romance in Carry On is the sweetest thing ever. Sure, it doesn't start right away. Which is a bit depressing, as I loved seeing them together the very most. But when it does start, it is the most perfect this. I cannot deal with it. The romance is with Simon and Baz. And oh my gosh. It is the best thing I have read. I loved their first kiss. And their second. And the next one. And ugh. It seriously gave me butterflies. They are the cutest. Not the most romance, but the very sweetest one.

I've still got my hands on his cheeks, and his cheeks aren't so cold anymore, not where I've been touching them. And when I suck on his lips, they go almost pink. For a few seconds, anyway. I wonder how long he's wanted this. I wonder how long I've wanted it.

I don't know what to say about the plot in this one. The magic is gorgeous. I loved the spells they did. I adored how smart Penny was, how close she and Simon were, and just friends. I loved how Simon and Baz became friends and then more. Loved how exciting this book was from start to finish. I loved every moment. The story is about trying to end the villain. I loved finding out the awesome twists. I adored the ending. I loved how it ended for Simon. I cannot. Every single part of this book was perfection.

My only issue with this book: It ended too soon. I need a sequel. I know this is a standalone fantasy. But I want a second book more than I want anything. I want to read more about Baz and Simon being in love. I want to read about them having adventures. I want to read about how Simon is able to live with what happened to him. I must know. I need a second book so badly. Oh, please. I would love it the most. Ack. So yes. Crossing all my fingers for that. I would buy and read it in a heartbeat.

What is the relationship between doing Zen and doing good? According to Bernie Glassman's Infinite Circle, they are inseparable. Glassman, a Zen teacher and social activist for three decades, uses the pages of Infinite Circle to explicate his philosophy, which unites diversity and oneness, or the relative and the absolute. For notions of the absolute Glassman turns to the Heart Sutra. For the relative, he explains the Bodhisattva Precepts. To reconcile these two realms, he tackles a brief but complex eighth-century treatise called The Identity of Relative and Absolute. Although the subject matter is challenging, the book is based on a series of lectures. Glassman, a former applied mathematician and aerospace engineer, keeps the tone conversational and works in examples from science and everyday life. For Glassman, enlightenment does not follow from doing Zen; rather, to be enlightened is to do Zen, and vice versa. Former abbot of the Zen Community of New York, Zen master Glassman (Instructions to the Cook) expounds upon three written works here. Though primarily for intermediate and advanced practitioners, some beginners may also find it helpful. The first half is devoted to the 24 lines of the Heart Sutra. So thorough is Glassman's explication that the title alone consumes 10 pages, many addressing the first word of the Sanskrit title, maha. Glassman was trained as a mathematician, a background that becomes evident when he uses the image of the circle: "If we are all within the same circle, then all of this is One Body; there is no outside. Since there is no outside, there is no inside either.... If there is no outside for the circle is infinite then not only is there no inside, there is also no circle anymore." The second section closely examines "The Identity of Relative and Absolute," a classic poem written by Chinese master Shih-t'ou Hsi-ch'ien exploring enlightenment, intimacy and the call to action. Action is of particular importance to Glassman, a cofounder of the international social activists' Zen Peacemaker Order. The third section examines the Bodhisattva precepts, with emphasis on "nonkilling." The author's style and thinking are like thick, polished glass: clear, compact and strong. Marrying metaphor, illustration and abstraction, he reaches to the heart of many essential concepts, reminding us firmly that, among other things, "we don't practice to become enlightened... we practice because we are enlightened."

Infinite Circle: Teachings in Zen

This amazing little book is anything but little. It invites us into a world both familiar and inconceivable, and points to a practice which makes a difference in the world around us as well as within. Starting with the Heart Sutra, Roshi Bernie takes us into the relative realities we encounter moment by moment to the absolute oneness of life. Next, his commentary on The Identity of Relative and Absolute, presents the inseparability of the two seemingly opposite domains, and the implications of that . Finally, examining the Bodhisattva Precepts, he opens the aspects of the life of zazen in the everyday world. A wonderful wellspring to return to over and over again. Each reading a new reward.

Tetsugen spells it all out

Bernie Glassman is one of the greatest American Zen teachers. In this book, he goes deeply into some core teachings of Zen. He starts with the Heart Sutra (Prajnaparamita Hridaya Sutra). When I started attending a Zen temple, the nightly chanting of this sutra always confused me, but Glassman's line-by-line analysis shows how this sutra contains great wisdom, and makes understanding clearer.
His analysis of the precepts has been the most helpful to me. He explains the various ways of interpreting each precept, and demonstrates the need for balance. For instance, one of the precepts is non-killing. Some sects of Buddhism extend this to not killing insects and micro-organisms. Glassman explains that to understand this precept, we need not follow it to this level, but we must be aware of it, and try to cause less damage. The precepts, on some level, are an admonition to try our best, and Glassman's discussion will help us to be peacemakers in each moment of our lives.

Heart sutra explained

Any Zen student could benfit from reading Bernie's analysis of the heart sutra, which is the subject of the first half of this book. Bernie throughly analyzes the sutra somtimes going as far as to analyze every syllable of a word. This may seem like it could be very dull. 70 or so pages of analysis on a 24 line sutra might seem a bit excessive, but Bernie some how keeps it interesting.
Considering the importance of the heart sutra in Zen practice it seems to me this book should probably be considered for required reading for all beginning Zen students. All of that withstanding there is still the second half of the book in which bernie offers more of the same insights on the identity of relative and absolute and the bodhisattva precepts. This is good stuff and a pretty easy read so I'd highly recommend it.
