About the Author
Kathryn Cave was born in Aldershot in Hampshire. She has three grown-up children and four grandchildren. Kathryn has written more than 20 children's books for all ages including Something Else. Chris Riddell was a student of Raymond Briggs at Brighton. He now works in a range of different areas of illustration, including political cartoons. He has written and illustrated many children's books and has won the Kate Greenaway Medal twice and the Nestle Children's Book prize seven times.

Teaching Tolerance and Difference

I absolutely love reading this book to my niece. And she loves having it read to her. She especially likes the lunch squishing part, but the lesson is also fantastic. I highly recommend this to anyone trying to teach empathy and kindness to the kids in their lives.

It's OK to different - thoughtful for younger readers

This is a lovely book about someone who is different, yet wants to be like the others. He tries to fit in, with little luck. One day he meets someone else who is also a bit different and they become great friends, after a rocky beginning. Teaches accepting others for who they are and not to be mean and nasty - it is a nice sentiment and one that needs to be taught! There's a fun little surprise at the end, when another visitor knocks at the door. I highly recommend it and have given it often as a gift.

A little creature named Something Else is rejected and made to feel bad by everyone. I call that bullying. Everything changes when a creature similar to Something Else shows up on his doorstep. But instead of treating the Something with the kindness he was never shown - he promptly rejects him. When he realizes he has caused the same pain and sadness - he charges after his new friend to begin an amazing friendship. It ends with a cute surprise when something Weird shows up allowing both of them to embrace yet another different looking friend. As an elementary school counselor, I'm still learning how to fine tune this book with the students. I just started using it this past year and have been mostly using it to talk about differences. But we also bring up friendship and bullying. I love hearing kids' reactions to this book.
