This project illustrates the pros and cons of working within the DC universe. After decades of appearing in multiple comics, the DC superheroes have accumulated such complicated personal histories, it's difficult to do a new story that acknowledges relevant past experiences and simultaneously copes with present crises. Trying to revitalize sales of the most recent version of Supergirl, writer David resurrected the original version (Kara Zoe-El, Superman's blonde Kryptonian cousin) and dropped her next to the contemporary Supergirl (Linda Danvers, brunette Earthling). Both are gorgeous, and the many panels displaying them in skimpy spandex outfits are droolworthy. However, David's avowed purpose is to contrast Kara's sweet, klutzy naivete with Linda's more jaded adolescent angst. This aspect of the story works, especially when the more scientifically informed Linda patiently corrects Kara's assumptions about the extent of her superpowers. Working against this genial mood is the fact that a Supergirl eventually will have to die as part of DC's major megastory from 15 years ago, Crisis on Infinite Earths. Also, David feels constrained to use more characters from the DC stock company, including gleeful villain Xenon, who's having a fine time killing Supergirls one by one. And so the plot spins along, ransacking the career of Superman and company for events to stitch together and reinterpret in a fresh light. It's all ingenious but ultimately shallow. There's only so much lore that average readers can keep handy in memory, and this story line requires more than all but Supergirl loyalists can supply.

Too Revealing

Nice story, great art. Cannot give it 5 stars as it is a bit lewd. The outfits are too revealing, this is standard now with both D. C. and Marvel. Comics would sell without pushing the sex and the audience would again be appropriate for kids. When I grew up in the late 60's and 70's comics were more modest and kids loved them. The target audience it seems now must be older teens and adults. A shame really. (At least in the movies they are not as crude).

A great read.

OK so yet another DC story in which they put two different incarnations of a character against each other. DC has done this many times before in various time/reality bending stories. And yet as with many things about super hero comics Peter David simply does it better. Whereas many of these stories are little more than having a good laugh at the silver age's expense, PAD does more than that. He shows that super hero comics have matured as a genre and even an art form, but also, that in that growth, has maybe lost something. Something special, something fun, something pure. Perhaps in an age of MAX and Vertigo, a little silver age innocence once in a while wouldn't hurt us.
And as always PAD really shines when it comes to characterization. I went into this knowing very little about the Linda Danvers Supergirl. She was an Earth girl bonded with the alien matrix Supergirl and then something about an angel...or something. But her confusing origin aside within a few pages I felt like I knew her as a person.
A must read for any Peter David fan.

A superhuman story that is surprisingly touching

Peter David is often regarded as one of the best writers in comics, and there is good reason for that. He spent years writing the Incredible Hulk for Marvel (and still remains the best writer to ever tackle the character), and with this final arc for the old Supergirl series for DC, David takes his love for the classic pre-Crisis age stories and infuses them with a modern edge. Linda Danvers is the brunette, blonde-wig wearing earth bound Supergirl who now finally has the respect of her fellow super heroes and she has a grip on her life now as well. Naturally, none of it lasts long. Out of the sky comes blonde haired, cheery, and naive Kara Zor-El, claiming to be Superman's cousin Supergirl. What neither girl knows is that reality is being played around with, and that Kara is destined to die in the penultimate battle from Crisis on Infinite Earths. I don't want to go into anymore because the story that develops is surprisingly touching and offers up some even more surprises to boot. Not to mention that Ed Benes' (Birds of Prey) gorgeous pencil work conjures up some truly drool worthy interpretations of the female form. Because the title never really sold all that well, Many Happy Returns ended up being the final arc for the title, which is all the more fitting a send off. Much like Clark Kent learns in the final frames of the last pages, new readers will learn that this was a book that was often misunderstood by many, but loved by a dedicated few. Forget the relaunched Supergirl title (first by Jeph Loeb in the pages of Superman/Batman) and check this out, you won't regret it.
