great book for reading, labor intensive recipes

I am a long time fan of JGV cook books. Simple to Spectacular is my favorite cookbook ever, and I use it quite a lot - especially when I am looking for that wow factor.
JGV's new book is more Asian than fusion. Although it uses some western ingredients, such as creme fraiche and butter, the recipes are essentially Asian.
Also, unlike Simple to Spectacular, these are clearly restaurant recipes, and no effort was made to simplify them and adjust them to home cooking.
Many of the recipes are labor intensive - loads of pots and pans are used, and many steps. They are still very attractive and make me want to get in the kitchen and star cooking.
There are a few simple recipes - I tried the egg and tomato soup and it is definitely going to become part of my everyday repertuar.
Last comment: although Asian cuisine should be healthy, many of the recipes in this book contain loads of butter and/or sugar.

Summary: a good book for people who really like cooking, to be used for special occasion meals.

Fantastic Cookbook, Yet Not For The Culinary Amateur...

The recipes I've made from this cookbook have been, thus far, exquisite, consistently offering a delicious array of textures, layered and complex flavor combinations, and beautiful presentations. I'll also add that the few dishes I've made so far have both the look, and, more importantly, the taste, of something I would happily pay top dollar for at a restaurant.

Last night I made shrimp cakes with a peanut/mint sauce as a starter, which was satisfying and scrumptious. As an entree, I served up the roasted curried codfish with artichokes, snap peas and a tamarind/chile/garlic sauce, which was simply one of the best seafood dishes I've ever prepared at home (and I've cooked things from many great cookbooks, including dishes by Eric Ripert, Thomas Keller, Bobby Flay, Mario Batali, etc.).

This cookbook has a great layout, wonderful pictures, and, most importantly, is sure to greatly expand the average foodie's palate and kitchen technique, opening the doors to a world of Eastern flavoring and ingredients. I've cooked three recipes and I've already learned so much! The only issue? Almost every recipe features very rare ingredients, ranging from the obnoxious-to-acquire to the impossible-to-acquire. It's very important to learn how and what to substitute, otherwise I can see this cookbook becoming merely a dust-collecting frustration for many at-home cooks, especially if you live in the suburbs and really only have one supermarket in town (luckily I live in NYC, where you can find almost anything on this earth as long as you're willing to search around town).

If you're a Jean Georges fan and appreciate his mastery of flavor, you're sure to love this approach to Asian cooking (this book seems to me to be a fusion of many countries, primarily Vietnam, but also Korea, China, and Thailand). The way you experience his recipes, some at once moist, succulent, crunchy, tangy, sugary and then spicy, are a total treat, and will get you excited to be in the kitchen. If you're serious about cooking and serious about challenging recipes that will really pay off for your guests, then this is a fantastic cookbook.

The real JGV

I worked in one of Jean-Georges' restaurants for a year and have made several of the recipes in this book dozens of times. Certainly most of them have been simplified for home cooks, but I can assure you that the spirit of the recipes is the same.

What is remarkable about JGV, as a French chef, he is very limited in his use of cream and butter. He uses a lot of soy- and vegetable-based sauces. Some purists will say these aren't true Asian dishes, and they'd be right. This is "fusion," much as I hate that word. But JGV's food is straightforward and delicious. He doesn't try to go over the top, to make things complicated just because he can. He doesn't try to be whimsical or to blow your mind. He just wants to create great food that you will remember.

Certainly some of the recipes here are ambitious and include a lot of obscure ingredients, but if there's an Asian market near you, there isn't anything you can't find there.

The book itself is beautiful, the photography is fantastic. And a bargain, for what it is.

A Great Prayer Book!!!

I love a good prayer book. This one couldn't have been a better fit for me. I just moved across the country to take a new position as an associate at a new church, and when I saw Tyndale offering this book I thought it would be a great tool to kickstart my ministry. I was amazed at how well the book is written. With prayers that are practical and Biblical I couldn't put this book down. I used it over and over each day for a couple weeks. I was enthralled. I would strongly recommend this book to any pastor out there. If you're struggling with a difficult board or getting to know new people this book would be helpful. Go check it out today.

What a great little book to give to your pastor, aspiring pastor,elder or anyone that needs a little help in the area of prayer. This little book is full of inspirational prayers that anyone can use.

It also makes a great mediative book , as you can spend your devotional time praying over special people that you know.

Eloquent Pastoral Prayers

Few books appeal to me more than a book of well-written, well-prayed prayers. This is that.

A Pastor Prays for His People (A Collection of Wise and Loving Prayers to Help You through Life's Journey) by pastor Dr. Wendell C. Hawley arranges dozens of pastoral prayers by month and occasion. In addition to the usual holidays (Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, etc.), there are prayers for a church business meeting, prayer for a new pastor, weddings, funerals--even a Christian prayer for Ramadan.

Drawing upon years of experience composing prayers for public worship, Hawley eloquently helps the people of God bring joys and struggles, problems and praises, hopes and fears before God. A Pastor Prays for His People is a gold mine for pastors and church leaders, and a solid theological model for anyone. An example is Prayer Number Thirty-Seven:

Most glorious God, God of compassion, God of forgiveness,
I need your presence.
Great Physician, I need healing.
I am spiritually lukewarm
and unbelief mars my confidence in trusting you--
brokenness and repeated failures occupy my attention.

Because most of the prayers employ corporate language ("we," "us," etc.), however, they are not as personal or intimate as, say, John Baillie's A Diary of Private Prayer, but this volume deserves a place alongside that classic, among others.

Highly recommended

This work is especially interesting as it represents the shift in author's mature thinking, which gives birth to existential mood in Schelling's philosophy. The edition contains interesting foreword by the translator which guides the reader into the zeitgeist of German idealism and Schelling's thought in particular. As for the quality, the pages of this edition are made of high quality paper. Although the price still seems to be a bit high for the book of 225 pages, nevertheless it is worth the price. Highly recommended!

Robert E. Moyer, Ph.D., is currently an associate professor of mathematics at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minnesota. The coauthor of four bestselling Schaum's Outlines in mathematics, he has also written math questions for the GED and the ASVAB. From 1978 to 1990 he worked with the Georgia Assessment Program that administered the K-12 testing program in Georgia and the Georgia Teacher Certification program, writing test questions and conducting workshops for teachers who needed help passing the mathematics test for high school teachers or the mathematics portions of the elementary and middle grades teacher tests.

Helped me kick the GRE's butt!

I took the revised GRE yesterday. Several weeks ago I was feeling really weak on my math skills, even though I had worked through a Princeton Review book. The PR book was just too much strategy and not enough actual math. This book walked me through examples of math that I just didn't remember, and had lots of practice problems for every skill. It was absolutely phenomenal and I would recommend it to anyone who feels shaky on GRE math. I was feeling pretty confident going into the test yesterday after working through this book over the past few weeks, and I knocked it out of the park!

Great review of the basics

I felt that this book was a great way to review all of the basic math fundamentals from grade school that I had forgotten. The difficulty of the questions is not on-par with the actual GRE, but I used this book as a way to start reviewing for the quant section. After going through this entire book, I started to look at actual GRE questions and get into the harder aspects of the quant section.

Get supplemental material if you're not 100% sure how to already do most of this. It doesn't do that great of a job explaining step-by-step. I used it in conjunction with the Magoosh site, which is a recommended material. Decent review though.
