When he died in 1811 at the age of 34, Kleist left behind a corpus of works that, while small in quantity, were and still are among the finest German texts. This volume includes the majority of Kleist's writings in English translation. An outstanding representation of his work, this selection offers three plays, eight short stories, five anecdotes, and three essays. Kleist's dramas and stories resonate with complex circumstances and obscure consequences that the characters struggle to sail through. Things are not always what they seem to be; intriguingly, the guilty can look innocent and the innocent guilty. The play The Broken Jug, as well as the stories "Michael Kohlhaas" and "The Chilean Earthquake," depict predicaments of the falsely accused who are denied justice. Constantine, a fellow at Queen's College, Oxford, does an outstanding job of conveying the beauty of Kleist's literary style while allowing himself some liberties in translation. Highly recommended for literary and large collections.

Remarkably modern, dark and at times very funny

I was taken by Francine Prose's discussion of Kleist in "Reading Like a Writer" and picked up this edition of Kleist's selected works. This was my first encounter with Kleist. I do not read German and cannot comment on the translation as it relates to the original. However, I found "The Broken Jug" to be laugh-out-loud funny. I was prepared to hate the play on the basis of the names alone (Adam and Eve?), but reading Adam's increasingly desperate judicial improvisations is very pleasurable.

"The Broken Jug" and "The Marquise of O." are two of the best works I've read this year. Kleist is good at sudden twists that make perfect sense of the preceding material when revealed. Some of the short pieces, such as "The Beggarwoman of Locarno," are also interesting and evocative.

Not von Kleist, the translation!

Heinrich von Kleist was a personal discovery for me last year - I think his stories, novellas, and plays (at least "The Prince of Homburg" and "The Broken Jug" - I haven't read the others) are amazing. "The Earthquake in Chile" has got to be one of the most awful stories written.

These translations are very difficult to read, however. I bought this and ended up having to go to the library for alternate editions - I don't have those books with me right now, and I haven't bought another edition, so I can't recommend which translators to get. This is just a warning. "The Broken Jug" in particular is almost incomprehensible. I suspect the problem is that the translator has translated German idioms too literally, at the expense of naturalness, and even readability.

So, von Kleist, great, great, great! But beware, buyers of this particular translation.

He has been on the faculty at the University of Texas since 1998, where he is the Annabel Irion Worsham Centennial Professor of Psychology and Marketing and director of the program in the Human Dimensions of Organizations at University of Texas. Markman has published over 150 scholarly works on topics including analogical reasoning, categorization, decision making, and motivation. Additionally, he is a member of the medical advisory board of the Dr. Oz Show and on the scientific advisory board of Dr. Phil.

Robert Duke, PhD, is the Marlene and Morton Meyerson Centennial Professor and Head of Music and Human Learning at University of Texas at Austin. A University Distinguished Teaching Professor, Elizabeth Shatto Massey Distinguished Fellow in Teacher Education, and Director of the Center for Music Learning, he is also director of the program in psychology of learning at Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles. Duke has published over 75 scholarly articles related to music learning, memory, perception, and behavior, and has received national awards for research and teaching from the Music Educators National Conference and from the Music Teachers National Association.

This is a wonderful set of short essays on how our brains work and why other people don't always behave the way we think they should. I'm looking forward to Brain Briefs 2.

Really enjoyed this book. It was easy to read and each chapter is a subject unto it self. I have re-read some chapters more than once. It is very readable-yet the science is there to back up the research.

Refresher teacher book

I used this book teaching GED for students that had scored very low on the TABE to get into the GED class. It is one of the best, in fact in my mind, the best "refresher" math book. The explanation in illustration, text, and examples is very easy to understand.

Meh! So-so.

It was a great answer book but for me and that is just me, it didn't help me figure out for myself how to solve an issue. Like the "Guess what," math part where you have to guess a sequence of some sort. Might work for someone else, but it did not always for me. Guess I am just going to have to seek out a patient tutor! LOL!

Lost in America's shadow

The island nations of the Caribbean Sea share an awkward relationship with the USA, and one that is an extension of the former's relationship with European colonial powers. The primary theme that runs thru this history is consumption; specifically the consumption of goods, people, and the environment of the Caribbean by white outsiders. Starting with the initial encounters of Columbus and the spaniards, and progressing thru the dictates of the United Fruit Company and tour companies, this book examines the economic relationship between the Caribbean and outside powers.

The book is divided into several chapters, and each focuses on one theme of this relationship. One chapter examines the natural goods originating in the Caribbean that have been exploited for foreign consumption, to the point that many Caribbean nations cannot feed themselves with the food they grow. Another chapter looks at how colonial and now Western economic policies have created a social structure that destroyed the local natives, and replaced them with a mix of black slaves and their descendants, creoles, and mulattoes; all living in poverty. All of this benefitted the European and American consumer. Another chapter examines the images of the Caribbean, and how they have been formed and transformed to suit the needs of Westerners, whether they be cruise lines, hotel companies, or fruit companies.

The book itself is not too long, but the text is quite condensed with lots of references. The subject matter is a conglomeration of history, economics, sociology, and geography. The topic is interesting, and the approach is innovative. A warning though, the book assumes the reader has some initial historical knowledge of the Caribbean from the 1500's onwards. Overall, a good read but not great.

Very academic but throughtful and sophisticated

This book breaks new ground by asking how the Caribbean has been created as an imaginary place, a commoditized image in he minds of the outside world, over the centuries since the islands were first plundered and looted by European adventurers. The paradox is that a part of the world which has been the scene of horrible and brutal genocide, followed by centuries of slavery and colonial exploitation, has developed a public image as an innocent island playground, full of sun & fun.

At times the prose is a bit heavy, and the usual array of thick French theorists are paraded through the streets, like an academic carnival. There is nothing particularly unexpected if you know the literature on the region. I would not recommend this as an introduction to the sociology of the Caribbean, but it should be required reading in any advanced course on the area, and it would be useful to read it along with some books on Hawaii, Bali, Israel and Rome to see how identity and tourism have intersected in different ways along different historical trajectories.
