About the Author
David Powers is an Adobe Community Expert for Dreamweaver and author of a series of highly successful books on PHP, including PHP Solutions: Dynamic Web Design Made Easy and Foundation PHP for Dreamweaver 8. As a professional writer, he has been involved in electronic media for more than 30 years, first with BBC radio and television and more recently with the Internet. His clear writing style is valued not only in the English-speaking world; several of his books have been translated into Spanish and Polish. What started as a mild interest in computing was transformed almost overnight into a passion, when David was posted to Japan in 1987 as BBC correspondent in Tokyo. With no corporate IT department just down the hallway, he was forced to learn how to fix everything himself. When not tinkering with the innards of his computer, he was reporting for BBC television and radio on the rise and collapse of the Japanese bubble economy. Since leaving the BBC to work independently, he has built up an online bilingual database of economic and political analysis for Japanese clients of an international consultancy. When not pounding the keyboard writing books or dreaming of new ways of using PHP and other programming languages, David enjoys nothing better than visiting his favorite sushi restaurant. He has also translated several plays from Japanese.

So far, misleading and vague
By Kevin Hawley
I received this book a little while ago, and have just recently found the time to go through it from cover to cover. So far, I've gotten to chapter four, and I'm left with many many questions.
First off, in case you're not aware, you must set up a php testing bed on your computer. If you have a mac, Apache should already be installed. However, you must do some tweaking and downloading of new and different files from third parties in order to make it work. The instructions given in the book are incomplete and very vague. The author assumes that everything on my end of this learning process is working correctly and he proceeds to carry on with his poor instructions. No references or sources are given in case the reader gets stuck.
So right from the get-go, before you can even create your first document and work on the first lesson, you are already running into problems.
As I mentioned, I'm only in chapter four, so I'm willing to assume that the book gets better and makes more sense if I were to continue.
Unfortunately, his poor instructions have left me stranded and wishing I'd never wasted my money on this book.
Assuming that I will be able to fix this problem and carry on with the lessons in the book, I would be more than happy to re-write this review and apologize for my issues due to user-error. Until then, all authors of technical manuals need to feel the pressure that comes from the stress of their readers when they're faced with poorly-written manuals.
Overall, this is an industry that has a plethora of inept instructors and authors who assume that their readers have the same 'basic' knowledge that they do. As a result, us readers are left feeling confused, upset, and regretful that they wasted their money on their product in the first place.
Rather than just complain, I'll do you the extra service of providing you with an example of how manuals SHOULD be written. 'CSS: The Missing Manual' by David Sawyer McFarland is PERFECT. Although it is a different scripting language, the whole approach to teaching someone a new language is demonstrated perfectly in this book. AUTHORS TAKE NOTE!

Great Book for Beginners
By KingMaximo
If you've never written a line of PHP code then this is the book you're looking for. It is very well written for a beginner and provides step-by-step instruction almost every step of the way. After reading through this book and following along with the exercises in each chapter you will have a solid foundation to build on. This is one of the best books I have ever read as far as teaching the basics of a language, the author does a wonderful job explaining things in a way that someone who has never written a script could understand.
However, this is one of the biggest problems with the book for most people that would be interested in it. Coming from a programming background (Visual Basic, VBScript, JavaScript mainly), I had never written a PHP script before, but the book was so geared toward beginners that after maybe an hour of reading I was checking online for the more complex workings of the language. The author spends the majority of the book explaining simple processes that any experienced programmer would grasp very easily. However with this book along with the PHP Online Manual and additional online reading I feel that I can accomplish most any task with PHP now after a very short amount of time.
If I could go back I would probably get one of the more advanced PHP books, but if you don't have much experience with scripting languages you can't go wrong with this book.

Perfect!
By G. Sideman
I found this book to be a great intro. It introduces you to the basic and not so basic techniques needed to master the language. The book walks you through building one simple real life web site, with all the common features. You move on from one topic to the next as you add more functionality.
It is well written, clear, and the code examples provide before and after versions for each step, which allows you to spend as much or as little time as you want in actually hand coding the examples (I find it helps to actually do it yourself in most cases).
Also - the examples are thorough & detailed, and they always work. Going through half the book at this point - I did not find a single error. The author bothers with real life details like - "though not strictly necessary, if you don't add here this feature will not work in IE" - that's the stuff you need to know.
I found that if you have non-web programming experience - this is a perfect book to get you into professional php.
If you have no programming experience - you need a different primer imo.
