This reference work defines symbols not only as visual icons (including shapes, color, and geometric designs) but also as biblical, classical, and mythological figures; botanics; minerals; and animals (real and mythical) as they relate to literature, dreams, art, and so forth. The choice of the over 2000 cross-referenced terms included here was necessarily subjective, for almost anything in the universe can be construed as having an emblematic meaning. Prehistorical to modern periods are covered and, although there is a Western emphasis, the author attempts to place symbols in appropriate cultural contexts. This work, which consolidates much arcane information, is valuable for its elucidation of both the esoteric and commonplace. Generally recommended, although there is no need to duplicate if a collection has sufficient works of this nature. A similar title, Carl G. Liungman's Dictionary of Symbols , was chosen as one of LJ 's best reference books of 1991.--Ed.

Very Detailed Source for Symbolism!

My English professor in college had suggested that I purchase this book for our symbolism unit. It was very affordable, shipped incredibly fast, and was in excellent condition upon receiving it. I have so far found it to be incredibly helpful and insightful! The descriptions for each icon are comprehensive and thorough. Thanks to this book, I have been able to successfully improve my essays through translations of symbols I found within this text, and it has also helped me incredibly in understanding the content of what I was reading! The only reason this book did not receive five stars was because I had noticed there were quite a bit of symbols that are not mentioned. However, it is a great product nonetheless that I definitely do not regret purchasing! I highly recommend it if you have a tendency to see things "black and white," as I had!

Good book - bad print.

Great book, but be careful about being snickered into buying the paper back copy, as the print quality of the individual pages is dramatically worse. Compared to the hardcover, images are blurry and pages translucent, making for a less pleasurable read by far.
Pay the extra money for the hardcover edition, or try to find it elsewhere used for cheaper, because although the price difference is significant - it's worth it.

This is a nice book it mention so much it talks about the so called Star of David and solomon cupid gods the ank the worship of a penis and so much more highly recommended get this book nicely detailed information black and white pictures a easy read you will be happy to add this to your library.
