Constructions (Writing Architecture), by John Rajchman

foreword by Paul Virilio In this series of overlapping essays on architecture and art, John Rajchman attempts to do theory in a new way that takes off from the philosophy of the late Gilles Deleuze. Starting from notions of folding, lightness, ground, abstraction, and future cities, he embarks on a conceptual voyage whose aim is to help "construct" a new space of connections, to "build" a new idiom, perhaps even to suggest a new architecture. Along the way, he addresses questions of the new abstraction, operative form, other geometries, new technologies, global cities, ideas of the virtual and the formless, and possibilities for critical theory after utopia and transgression.

Enlightening across the arts
By Gala Bent
I'm a visual artist, and was looking for a good text to help explore drawing and geometry, since these are two of the cornerstones of my practice. I found very intriguing synthesis here. Rajchman pulls from philosophy, painting, and psychology as well as, of course, architectural theory, to get inside a number of deceptively simple-sounding concepts-- folding, lightness, grounds. His visual arts references are a bit older-- Francis Bacon and Paul Klee, for example-- but they are astute and easily applied to contemporary artists. I'd love to hear him respond to the work of, say, Sarah Sze or Julie Mehretu or Olafur Eliasson in his chapter on "Other Geometries."

Mediocre
By jay5gen
Its an ok book. Purchased for a class, not very engaging. Still has my face imprint from falling asleep in it.

Ample food for thought in many fields, way beyond architecture.
